Hi, I'm new to the forum.. I've been trying to find information on chemotherapy for parrots. My husband and I have a Mitred conure named PJ. We've had him for three years, but he's bounced from owner to owner before us. He's been a plucker for years, since long before I ever got him, but the vet said he was otherwise healthy. We have no idea how old he is, but he's probably an older bird. Our vet said he could around 30 and might have been a wild caught bird ( he has an open leg band).

Anyway, a couple weeks ago I noticed a chain of bumps under his wing and we made an appointment to see an avian vet. The vet couldn't readily identify the bumps, so PJ had surgery. The vet removed the chain of bumps and sent the biopsy in to be tested. My husband just got the call today and it's cancer. I am absolutely heartbroken. I love my parrot very much... He's more than just a pet to me... he's my family. I didn't get to talk to the vet myself yet, but will be back to see him on Wednesday. He said chemotherapy is an option. I didn't get any details yet though, and I just wanted to know if others here have had chemo for their birds, how much it cost, and how successful it was. I know I'll get more info at the vets office, but I'd like to learn as much as I can before then. Other than the bumps, my parrot is still eating and pooping normally and just as happy and feisty as he's always been. If we go the chemo route, how sick will it make him? I'd hate to do something that will make him sick, unless the odds are in his favor. Our vet is also over an hour drive away, so if he has to remain there it will probably affect our decision as well.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone has any experiences and info to share or good informative links for me to check out. Thanks :green1:

I wish I had info for you, but all if have is well wishes. You have a hard choice ahead of you no matter what, and I am sorry you have to go through this. You will make the best choice for your bird, no matter what, because that choice will be whatever your love for him tells you. Sometimes the loving thing is the hardest thing, but you can do it.

Dear Kotomi, Please do not get in a negative mindset and assume this is a death sentence for your bird. That is the worst thing you can do. Not one sparrow falls without his (God's) permission. My husband's uncle Dave has beat cancer 3 times and is healthy in his 70's. You just need to trust God and stay positive while praying about any steps you take. Hope this helps Bonita :rainbow1:
