Dear Friends, Emmy has been attacking (chewing) the wall paper in powder room 1in. x5in. 3 times I caught her. This was the behavior of my 2 birds who died due to egg binding. To my knowledge Emmy has not been intimate there is only Paddy who is 4x her size. But I have heard they can have eggs without a mate. I am so afraid! I can't lose her too! Please excuse the rant to me my birds are my grandchildren. Bonita :11:

The wallboard behind the paper is calcium, so if she's chewing the wallboard, that's what she's after.....feed her some scrambled eggs.....give her a large bowl of water to bathe in as frequently as she wants.....good luck.....

Dear Weco, I still need clairification. She has no mate or nest box. Is she expecting an egg?

I gave her a warm bowl of water, egg shell washed,Scrambled egg.Her but looks dirty shes always well groomed.I weighed her she's 1 gm. lighter than usual. Why would she lay a egg with no mate. The Gcc couldn't mount her he's 4x her size.

Birds have that ability, they just can't produce viable eggs without a mate.....egg laying producers have to candle their eggs to separate out those that are fertile & the double yolked eggs.....egg laying operations have several roosters in each barn.....to keep the hens laying.....

Bonita, my mother took my brother & I aside & had "The Talk" with us when we were about 10yo, maybe it's time you had a heart to heart with your hens.....

Thank You for the laugh. If Emmy is over 2yrs.Is she old enough to have an egg with no problems. Should she go to vet? My husband said she pooped on him it didn't look right. Thanks I've lost 2 keets to egg binding but they were very young. How can I stop her from laying? Bonita :11:

Make sure she gets plenty of night time hours (at least 12 hours), even if you have to create them artificially by covering her and turning out the lights. Don't feed soft, warm or fatty foods. Avoid petting her under her wings and near her tail. If she does things like lift her tail for you, rub her vent on you or regurgitate -- give her a little timeout back in her cage when she does these things. Or, if she does those things for a toy in her cage, remove that toy from her cage.

She should be old enough, but you really need to talk to your vet about how best to discourage her egg laying, though you also make sure her vitamin & mineral levels of calcium, vitamins D & E, phosphorus and selenium are on par for p'lets.....you could also discuss your vet's thoughts on administering Lupron and/or depo-Provera.....in the mean time I'd read up on discouraging companion birds from egg laying and change hers and/or your routines accordingly.....

You realize that budgies, canaries, cockatiels, finches, and lovebirds are the companion bird species most prone to egg binding, so you'll probably be OK with a parrotlet.....

Good luck.....

Thank You Weco, I'll read up on it. I don't like to give meds unless really needed. I've had serious side effects so I want to protect my babies. Except for Emmy's toe and nesting neither have had any medical issues they're lively and shiney feathered. Bonita :green2: :rainbow1:
