So maverick, being the little busy body that he is, scared the living crap out of me today. He was chewing on a feather that fell out, and all of a sudden I look over and the feather is gone, and he is just making a scene. It stopped in less than 30 seconds, but this made me think.

I have no idea what to do for a choking bird!

Is there anything at all we can do for them? Everything I've looked up, says get to get immediately. However I am at best.... 15 mins away from the vet. I don't know if we have that kind of time for an emergency like that.

So curious if anyone else has even ran into choking before and what can be done.

Ugh, I am still shook up!!
Thanks!

Interesting hypothesis, but I'm not sure the majority of us could do very much if we found our bird choking.....the initial problem would probably be:

1. Could we open their beak & look for the obstruction...
2. We've looked & find a seed hull crosswise in the bird's throat, just before its crop...
3. Oh, what am I going to get the seed hull out with, I don't have any forceps or a pair of needle-nosed pliers...
4. Even if you had the tools, could you remove the seed hull from a thrashing bird, without tearing the esophagus tissue?

I know mine is a rough scenario, but you might discuss the possibility with your veterinarian or any other scenario you might think of.....
