Kidney infection

As all of you know my African Grey, Charlie was in hospital last week with pneumonia. Got him back on Friday and he looks much better now. But then Monday evening I noticed Milo did not each as much as usual during the course of the day. So I assumed the heat and the fact that he is molting hard influenced it. Took his bowl out and sat with him and he ate quite nicely. Went to work on Tuesday, got home, same thing. When yesterday morning he was not going for his food again, I took him off to the vet, still suspecting that somehow his molting is affecting his appetite.

The vet told me he has kidney infection. Straight to hospital. But he still looks good, I caught it early, but it is life threatening.

Got an update this morning, he was on the drip last night and again this morning. Now they also say he is still weak, yet yesterday he did not seem so. He ate very little.

I can honestly say that my heart feels like lead in my chest. Please pray he pulls through this.

Thank you SennieSlave. I know you went through the same worry with your little one. I phoned them now, they say he is depressed and still hasn't eaten much. I told her they must also keep in mind that he is in general a little perch potato that lives to be picked up and loved on.

This is the same vet as Charlie was at last week, so again, no visiting. I am at work, but had to hide my tears many times today already.

Good Luck Milo, getter better! No visiting, did you bring him his comfort items? When Robin got sick we brought his snuggle hut and he sat on top of it, we got to visit.

You are so attentive to catch these things so early! You have very fortunate feathered companions!

Thank you so much. Both the prayers and the hugs are very well received on this side. The hardest part is not being able to hold him and say "it is ok, my boy, don't be scared". I know it is a very good vet, but still, you can not help but worry.

Thanks Robin. That is actually a very good idea. I did not think to do that. Milo has this teddy on whose head he loves to sleep. That would make the perfect comfort item!

Aloe Detox helps improve kidney function.

I would add that to the diet when he comes home. Just a little bit a day, mixed with juice will help liver and kidney functions, and will aide his recovery.

I know I harp on this stuff, but it really is wonderful stuff, especially for these types of things.

Thanks Flboy, I suppose it is just because I know them so well on the one hand (I am very bonded to Milo, Lol), luck on the other side, e.g. Charlie having a clear water poop that morning, and rather being safe than sorry by taking them to the vet when I think something might be off.

I think all of us have that same reaction when we see the "my bird is sick, what must I do" posts.....Get them to the vet ASAP....isn't it?

Thank you Birdman, I will check if we get this in South Africa. Not sure if we do, but I will definitely try it if we do. I recall you mentioning it in another thread as well. I hope we do!

Milo I feel for you. I hope Milo gets well soon. Then I hope both stay healthy and you don't have to deal with any more illnesses for a long time.

When Robin got sick, the vet looked him over and sent him home. You're luck they kept him and started treating him right away!

Oh gosh first one then another! You certainly don't need this . Prayers for Milo. You are such a good birdie mom .

Thank you all for your support. It means the world to know there are people out there who understands how it feels when our feathered children gets ill. Milo has always been such a strong healthy little birdie, I think a big part of the shock was realizing that he is actually sick.

The vet he is with is very well known and also the creator of the Animalzone range of bird products, foods etc. I know it is available in the UK but not sure about other countries. So I know he is in good hands, now I just pray that he is strong enough to come back from this.

I have to tell you guys though, having both birds this ill within a week from each other is no joke. I suppose I was a bit more paranoid about Milo's health after Charlie's scare last week, and that might have caused me to act sooner. The vet says it often takes weeks for people to notice something wrong with this kind of ailment, so being paranoid was a good thing this time.

The question I ask myself the whole time though, even though the vet says I caught it early because he is still in very good condition (only slightly dehydrated), is how long he has been ill already without me noticing.

Now waiting for tomorrow to get an update again.

There is absolutely no way of detecting this one any earlier absent a blood test revealing the infection.

There is nothing more you could have done, to improve the outcome of this, no matter what happens. DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF!

I completely agree with Mark, you are a wonderful parront and should not be blaming yourself at all. You caught both problems early, which so many more of us may have missed.
