I might get some stick for posting this as I'm not sure if some members might think this ok.
I know a lady, a lovely lady who owns two parrots and loves them, some of you might question that last bit after reading further but she really does love them, however I have a bit of a problem understanding why she a, uses plug-in air fresheners next to one of the cages (underneath and to the side) even though I have asked her "do you know air fresheners and birds do not mix? Her answer was "oh this one can't do any harm, it's not a spray one and it's not very strong" and b, (and there is no excuse of ingnorance here) she smokes quite heavily and in the room the parrots are in. Now this is one I really don't understand and it makes me angry because the poor birds are being forced to breath polluted air and they have no choice in the matter.

Thoughts?

I agree, I don't think she should be doing any of those things. In fact, just the fact that you told her that they could do harm, even if it's just a possibility, should be making her rip those plug in's right out of the wall! And smoking around them? Ugh, that one really bothers me.

Since we became a "bird household" last March (we now have 2 birds), we have stopped the use of scented candles, air fresheners, strong chemical cleaners, and the use of teflon pans. We made adjustments because WE were bringing them into our lives. We must do what's safe for them.

I am sorry, MPW, but I don't agree with you. She doesn't really love them. She loves what they give her but she doesn't love THEM. If she did, she would not smoke or use the air fresheners where they are after you told her they are not good for them.

A friend of mine once told me that most people who call themselves animal lovers are not really 'lovers' but 'enjoyers' and I have come to realize that she was 100% correct. Your friend seems to be one of them.

Here's a thought: shoot her in the foot with a 22 and say 'oh this little gun can't do any harm, its not very strong'. Then if she doesn't get the point repeat this procedure for as many days as the air freshener is in with the bird.

Hi, I am new but just had to reply to this post. I am allergic to these sprays and plug ins, I get a horrendously sore throat within minutes of entering a room containing one, the thing is that my allergy isn't apparent to others but I feel dreadful and my voice turns into a croaky mess after about ten minutes. It got so bad that I have had to give up home visits for work as most clients seem to have them now. I am not sure of the ingredients but I am convinced they must be very noxious. . On another note I stupidly put bleach and toilet cleaner in the toilet bowl together and created Chlorine fumes..... we all have to be so careful!

Birdamor, I have have to agree with your statement, yes she is probably a "bird enjoyer" but what I was trying to get across is that in every other way she is kind to these birds, talks about them a lot, they come out of their cages every day and she interacts with them. They are not household decorations and they have good diets.

Wendy, I saw your post about your little accident on another forum, I was the first to reply to it and it appeared you got a little stick for it from someone else. We all make mistakes but hopefully we learn from them and come away better informed for the future.

Thanks, I think the difference is that I listen to advice especially from more experienced bird owners than myself and learn from my mistakes, which are few thank goodness, I am usually over cautious. Also I sometimes think people have birds as ornaments or buy them as they think they will talk.To us they are dear to our hearts and we would move Heaven and Earth to make them happy!

She's in the grips of an addition - smoking - so she really isn't thinking about any of it rationally.

Air fresheners of all kinds are really just plain nasty. What ever happened to natural things to make your rooms smell good? Ever try fresh flowers? Maybe bake something. Open a window (granted that may not be any safer than smoking next to the cage, but still).

A lot of smokers go outside to smoke, now that the info is so clear on second hand smoke. Even with no birds, I'm surprised that she'd expose her family...assuming she has family.
