Green feces, watery droppings?

My CAG has recently started having a lot of liquid with her droppings. She still has formed fecal and urates the way they should look, but also a lot of liquid to accompany it.

This morning her feces are green, very artificial colored green. She has taken a huge liking to green grapes and I noticed she is eating too many and I need to cut back. I think all the liquid might be the cause of it in the droppings? but the green feces, what is that?

We are in the process of trying to find a diet for all 3 parrots and one of the foods she is offered had some green pellets in it... could it be the dye?

What they eat certainly does have an effect on their poop. For instance it my CAG drinks a lot of orange juice his poop is very watery and if he is given corn cobs it is very yellowy in colour. I would worry more if the fecal or urates were missing. If there is no change when altering his diet then I think that is the time for a visit to the vet.

Oh and we tried green peppers with the grapes yesterday, it may just be an overload of green stuff and juice. She acts perfectly fine, but we are trying out new diet options.

Grapes are mostly sugar juice and will make the droppings watery when they eat several at a time. Try to get your bird to eat mango, papaya or popegranate seeds which are hard to find right now and just a couple grapes.

Yeah, I definitely need to cut back on the grapes. I'm going to do that and try incorporating other varieties.

What you are describing is called polyuria and yes, certain foods will have that effect on birds but disease does also so keep a peeled eye on this. The best thing is to give them a different kind of fruit, veggie and green every day so there is no danger of overdoing it with one -besides, it ensures a healthy, varied diet.

I would not give an ekkie (or any other bird) something with dye in it (the colored pellets all have dye).

Grapes: they are not bad for birds and birds enjoy them so they are OK BUT you need to make sure they are US grown (the only ones I've found in the last 6 months or so are either from Chile or Mexico so my birds are eating only organic these days until the California crop is picked)

Yes, I'm working on weeding out the crap we have been having. I try to only buy 'made in the US' and the ones I'm currently getting are from California. I personally have always tried to buy as much locally grown and organic as I can find, and I eat a lot of fresh foods myself. So it shouldn't be hard to just offer what I'm eating to them.

I agree.
You might try a seed only diet for a day or two.Normal seed-eaters dropping are pretty easy to see. Should be dark-green with bright white urates. If the urates are green go see a vet, and watch for respirtory problems or watering eyes.

thanks guys. Shes been to the vet,all is normal except she needed more fat/protein. The green feces were from dye in one of the foods, which has been eliminated. All is well and improving.

I just recently got a blue headed pionus and her droppings are very weird. All I give her is seed for now, cause she does not like the pellets or fruit. Not trying to be graphical but her droppings are nothing but clear with a tiny green speck...is this good or bad?

That is definitely not good, from the sound of it. She should have urates with her feces.

Have you tried taking the seed away for the day and seeing if she eats any of the other food? She won't starve if you do it for a day. Also has she been to a vet?

Hi and welcome to the forum, Its not uncommon for a bird on a strictly seed diet to have occasionally clear droppings, however if they are clear or watery most of the time it could indicated problems such as liver disease or possibly some other serious condition, if you don't already have a good AVIAN vet, I suggest you find one and get the bird in for a check up as soon as possible, its always best to be safe than sorry, good luck and let6 us know how you make out, enjoy your stay :)

Hello, welcome to the forum.

One of my birds had similar symptoms, turned out she had an infection and needed antibiotics. It could be nothing, but as others said, a visit to a good avian vet is highly recommended. You should take a dropping specimen with you.

I was just looking this up because angel had a very very watery poo....i think it from stuff too high in sugar. I put a few too many banana chips into her second bowl...and i think thats all she ate yesterday as not too many of her pellets were gone....

Such little stinkers they really are like children, if you give them candy they will eat till sick!

Just noticed i and a grave digger on this post haha

Grave digger LOL... at least you noticed :D. It's okay unless you were answering the OP haha.

I hope Angel's poop is back to normal today. Sometimes there will be more urine in the dropping, and sometimes the poop might be less formed, but unless it's consistently abnormal, I wouldn't worry.

Hey thanks for the concern. And yep as i suspected it was all the bananas she ate. I took the bananas away, and within a day her poop was back to normal.

Just makes me have to remind myself you can't really leave larger amounts of food next to what they normally eat....assuming they will still eat both. They will only eat the one they like better!...and she likes bananas better then pellets go figure
