:grey:I've recently omitted them from by birds' diet, I've previously given shelled ones after inspecting them, mainly because my birds seem to be more partial to them than other nuts (the exception being Argyle and pine nuts) and they are already included in their tidymix but I have read so much about peanuts being linked to Aspergillosis that frankly it scares me. Even peanuts fit for human consumption can have something unseen going on inside the nut. So my verdict is "it's better to be safe than sorry". I would never forgive myself if something happened to one of my birds through something preventable and I don't even want to think of what life would be like without one of them. :green2:

Yea good move.

Eddie LOVES (and I mean LOVES) peanuts, but I cut him off too (he's on the patch now :p). I hate that I can't give them to him anymore, but why risk it if I don't have to. Anyway, he's taken to cashews as his favourite now so all good ;) He has an expensive sweet tooth does my Eddie

I've removed them from Fred's diet as well. They are included in the seed mix, that he gets....I now pick them out, and bin them. I feed a small portion of this seed mix, along with Veggies, fruit and pellets.

I'm with MPW and also don't use peanuts in my parrots diets for the same reasons, nuts are such a small part of their diet that its crazy to take the chance, I've substituded peanuts with human grade almonds, with all the new members coming on board lately I'm glad you brought this subject up again MPW, its a very important one thats still not discussed enough as many people still haven't heard of the danger....Thanks MPW! :)

Shame we must deny our birdies peanuts. If they never have them in the first place then they will not miss them. I feed almonds, walnuts, pine nuts, hazel nuts and pecans. I do pre crack them for Rosie. Also Antionette our resident nut expert (her business) suggest to keep them in the freezer to keep them fresh so that is where they are stored.

Not trying to start a worldwide peanut panic here, but to let people know, humans can also contract Aspergillosis from the fungus on peanuts as well ........

Can People Catch Aspergillosis?

Glad you brought it to members attention.

NOW you tell me !!!!!

Been in the business for almost 14 years !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank goodness I actually do not eat "my business" LoL
I occasionally eat a few plain almonds and cashew plain.

A bit of interesting info, before eating an almond, wipe it onto a white serviette, you will be shocked how much dirty it actually carries.

I just read the article Tannie posted and I am shocked to see that dried corn is also listed! Dried corn is part of Sterretjie's diet and she loves it. The outside of the pack says that it is a favorite among breeders and it is from AvianPlus.

Yes I am now very careful not to give Rosie those dried corn cobs they sell for birds, you never know what lies below the surface. They also make corn cob bedding for bird cages which is a real no no. That is what gave the famous parrot Alex the aspergillus fungus.

Dried corn kernels or the husk themselves. I pick the peanuts in the shell out of Fred's mix, but I can't pick out the dried corn.

I was speaking about the corn on the cob and I think they are ground up for various uses with animals. My cat's litter is made up of ground corn kernels. It is even used for heating in the winter. It has many good uses but not for our birds. The corn kernels found in bird seed should be safe. Newspaper is the safest bed for cage bedding. If you use any kind of nut shells or other organic matter the bird may injest it and get a crop impaction. Nasty stuff.

Ok, thanks! I use newspaper or paper towels to line cages, as I like to see the poop. ....so I'm OK there.
