Hi I have a Galah Cockatoo with Liver Disease and wondered if anyone has any info on the above which is described as an antioxidant and a good supplement for birds with this problem.

Any info greatfully received.

He's being treated by an Avian Vet at present and I intend to ask him about it too.

I don't know about DMG but I have see people talk about an Aloe detox for birds with liver problems. It was meant to be quite successful too i think.
It was an older thread but it's on these forums somewhere, hopefully someone can link it here for you (if i find it I will) .

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
I had amazing results with aloe detox, and so have several other people I know.

My BFA had FATAL LEVEL liver values... as in my ACV looked at the results of her labs, and said her liver values were so high she should be dead!

I GOT AS MUCH ALOE DETOX AND VITAMIN A FOODS AS I COULD INTO HER, AND PUT HER ON A STRICT DIET... AND HER LIVER VALUES CAME DOWN TO WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS...

So, yeah, I can't recommend the stuff highly enough!!! Talk to your ACV about it.

I'm skeptical of anything branded "detox" or anything of that sort without scientific evidence behind it, BUT, I trust in people like Birdman who know what they're talking about. It can't hurt so it's worth a try.

Hi all I just wanted to say thanks to all for your replies, much appreciated. My Plum is seeming better but still on meds from my AV. I am trying hard to exercise him more but he is such a perch potato. His weight has dropped and I am trying to improve on that slowly in an effort to improve his situation. Due another blood test next week and keeping everything crossed for positive info from it.

Hoping that Birdman666 will read this post.

I am going to my vet tomorrow to get x-rays for my moustache parakeet. He has a BA reading of 175. He is NOT acting sick but the vet wants to find out why the reading keeps going up.

How high was your bird's reading? Any questions and/or advice you can give me to calm my nerves. I am a WRECK. Love my little guy so much.

Hi Laura sorry to hear your parakeet is unwell. Just to calm you a little, my Plum has FLD and heart murmur and Bradycardia and he is still with me. My point with the right AV care and meds it's possible.

I have been given cholesterol test results and not Bile Acid levels. The X-Ray will hopefully show if there is any increase in the size of the organ.

What can you do? Best healthy diet you can, no fats, no sugars, no colours. Sprouted seeds provide excellent nutrition. Weigh him regularly and if he is up to it, exercise, flying if possible. I am unsure if the Aloe Detox has made an improvement, was unable to get him to take it undiluted so try that if you can. Always tell your AV what you are doing though.
What is the poop like?
Hope you find this useful?
