Hiroshi has been sitting fluffed up, wagging tail and has labored breathing with a strange "clicking" noise when he breathes. He is constantly sleeping/closing eyes. He is eating and drinking and his poop looks normal. He has no discharge from eyes or nose.

I know I need to get him to a vet asap and I am trying to get money together... unfortunately I just lost my job and am broke. I am trying my best to get money together. Please help me. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to help cure him? I have been giving him steam baths. I am so stressed out, upset and feel guilty. I even posted this on another forum before here because I am embarrassed I have no money to take him to the vet. I am trying my best. I don't know what to do, I'm devastated.:(:(:(:(:(:(

Thanks for the prayers Ap. I am totally miserable and screwed. If Canada didn't have health care for humans I wouldn't be able to pay to save myself. My job loss was unexpected as well as this. I am calling around to family and friends for a loan but everyone is broke :( I'm heartbroken. I am doing all I can.... Would a drop of Eucalyptus oil in a steam bath help? What about some foods that could boost his immune system?

I'm so sorrY Hiroshi is feeling unwell. Keep him warm, so he doesn't have to use energy to keep warm. I've no clue as to what it could be...respiratory infection?...maybe the vet will let you pay installments on the bill. I've read that some do....

I don't want to raise your hopes but many animal health care providers will do some pro bono ( free ) care. If you call the vet and ask for office manager and tell her your situation she may be able to help. You may be surprised. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

:( This is awful. I can understand you feel horrible, but believe me, you are a great parront. You are trying your best to get him medical attention.

As ha been said, just keep him warm and well nourished until you are able to get medical attention for him. I am praying for you and Hiroshi.

oh no! Poor Hiroshi, and poor you! Definitely ask a vet about payments, keep him warm and quiet and get him in as soon as you can! I would offer to send a few $$ but the amount I could contribute plus the difficulty of international money transfer (paypal?) probably wouldn't be much more than a gesture... :( crossing my fingers and sending good energy for both of you.

So sorry to hear this. Please call the vets and explain your situation. I am sure they will care for him now and let you pay later. Will pray for both of you!

Oh Beilana, I'm so sorry! That's so sad. :(

What a shame, Hiroshi was doing so well. And losing your job sure didn't help any. Bless your heart; what a nightmare this is.

Sending you prayers and positive thoughts as you deal with this. Keep us updated as best as you can.

Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! I send my prayers.
Keep him warm and hydrated. Leave the light on, a sick bird will sleep while it is light, but won't eat or drink. Ring your avian vet, explain your situation and ask about payment plans. My birds showed the symptoms you described, and it turned out to be a chill caused by draughts. After two nights in my hospital cage they were fit as ever. One vomited, but after a few hours that stopped. Their poos were fine and they ate and drank. Stay calm, he might pick up the panic.

.:(:(:(:(

That sounds exactly the way Sterretjie was/is. Is he drinking a bit more than usual? Give him some juice or water and see if he drinks. Just do not believe the vets when they say "if the bird eats, drinks and poops like normal then there is nothing wrong"!!!!!

I am NOT saying that he also has metal poisoning but there is no harm in giving him this recipe that Ant gave me, just in case.

My Favorite "Chelation Recipe" - home-made pesto sauce (also known as "Poor Man's Chelation Therapy" ... Note: Also safe and good for birds suffering from heavy metal poisoning!

Ingredients:

  • Fresh Cilantro (2 cups - packed) - alternatively: Coriander or Chinese Parsley) - Cilantro Helps Flush Out Heavy Metals
    • Without the help of any chelation agents, cilantro was able to remove the mercury in two to three weeks. (Acupunct Electrother Res 96;21 (2): 133-60.) '
    • Eating cilantro increased urinary excretion of lead and aluminum.
    • When cilantro was used concurrently with antibiotics (bacterial issues) or natural anti-viral agents and/ or fatty acids like EPA with D.A., an infection could be eliminated for good. (Acupnct Electrother Res. 95:20 (3-4): 195-229.)
    • Note: cilantro pills are available -- but the active component in cilantro is easily destroyed during processing -- fresh herbs are always best. You can add them to your soups or salads, or garnish any dish.
    • Bird owners who are concerned about heavy metal toxicities may feed some of this pesto -- or simply fresh cilantro - to their birds to provide excellent nutritional support and naturally get rid of toxins that have already been absorbed
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1/3 cup Brazil Nuts (selenium source)
  • 1/3 cup Pumpkin Seeds (zinc, magnesium)
  • 1/3 cup Sunflower Seeds (cysteine source)
  • 2/3 cup Flaxseed Oil (omega-3 fatty acids)
  • 4 tablespoons of lemon juice (vitamin C)
  • 2 teaspoons Dulse Powder (in the health food stores - usually where salts are)
  • (Bragg's Liquid Aminos - Optional - available at health food stores)
Put it all in the food processor, blend and ready to eat. Store in dark glass jars, if possible. It freezes well, so I purchase cilantro when in season and fill enough jars to last through the year. One holistic doctor stated that this recipe was able to cure one person suffering from high blood pressure due to mercury poisoning after only eating 2 teaspoons of this pesto daily for a week. So both for treatment and prevention -- all it takes is 2 teaspoons a day.

I pray all goes well - lots of hugs from across the ocean.:(

Hows Hiroshi doing? The "nebulising" is a good thing. Here are some tips I used:

1. Keep out of strong sunlight - not to say keep him in the dark but make sure there is no glare.

2. Get an onion and cut it in half. Leave it on a plate around the cage area and where he goes. The onion draws in bad bacteria in the air.

3. Keep the tempreture constant and dont move him too much.

4. Have you got a travelling box or small box? You can nebulise him in it because it is a smaller space and works better.

5. Make sure the food etc. are very close so he doesnt have to move to much.

6. The disinfectant that I use can be used for nebulising too, I got it from the vet.

Please could you kindly find out how much it will cost to see the vet etc - round about and send me a private message - I would be very grateful.

clean his cage more often and make sure that you scrub the bars etc. so that there is absolutely no signs of dry droppings etc.

I hope that some of this info helps...please keep me informed. I will help where I can.

Oh I forgot to add, if you do manage to go and see the vet then you HAVE to make the symptoms worse. I had to tell him that my parrot only sits on the bottom of the cage and stopped eating before they started listening. (I had to lie.:()

If you call a vet and they will not see the bird someone may kow who would see the bird with little to no pay for the visit. Often times the humain society has vets who will work that way. This happened with one of my cats. Praying for you too.

Oh No! Do you go to Avian & Exotic vet clinic http://www.calgarypetvet.com/? If so, they are Parrot lovers ( Even used to keep some pet budgies in the office. Not sure if they still do or not) But if you call them and explain your situation, I am sure that they will see Hiroshi for free, or put it on some kind of 'tab' until you are able to pay. Good luck!

Thank you all. I have been keeping him very warm, giving steam baths and making sure he is eating and drinking. I used his travel cage and have been wrapping warm blankets around it as well as inside for him to lay in at bedtime. I also cleaned both cages. I will be calling the Avian and Exotic clinic today and try to set something up. I can't lose my baby :(
