Parasites

Hi all. I'm hoping for a bit of advice please. My grey has just returned from holidaying at my parents for a month whilst I had some work done at home. I've noticed her flicking her head and wings quite a lot so and nowhere near as chatty; possibly because she's busy preening. I occasionally spot her doing laps of the cage (which she doesn't usually) and she seems to be flying a lot more; as if she's irritated. What do you think the likelihood is that she's picked up cat/dog fleas as opposed to a traditional bird parasite? My parents have cats and a dog but have never had birds. I'm going to try to get an appointment with the vet, but does anyone recommend a particular product for either situation? Thank you

I wouldn't recommend trying out any products unless directed by an avian vet.

I would say it's pretty unlikely that your grey got fleas from the cats and dog, as these are probably "mammal specific" fleas. It may still be possible for the fleas to 'jump hosts', but generally speaking, it's rather uncommon for parrots to get fleas.

Rather, parrots are more likely to pick up mites or lice than they are to get fleas.
