I've recently read up about the holistic benefits to ACV in water to health reduce bacteria and fungal levels in water dishes and birds guts but what is the different or why is it only "Mother" vinegar (unfiltered and unpasteurized) where the benefits come from?

I understand vinegar is acidic and studies suggest it helps level out the acid an alkali in our (and our birds) bodies but why would filtered cider vinegar do nothing while raw unfiltered has it all?

Thank you Plumsmum, that hub pages link did answer a few questions (the nutritional benefits to the mother) but that doesn't entirely answer why most if not all links say that if it doesn't have the mother there's no point using it.
But that did explain that ACV with mother has more benefits. :)

Always, plenty of salt and vinegar XD Though I did find some ACV with mother in it today so I have some in hand.

I'll conclude for now, until I find out otherwise, that Apple Cider Vinegar is still helpful in it's filtered state for keeping water fresher for longer and adding the occasional acidic boost for the body (human and bird) but the best value comes from the mother/pulp where the added enzymes and nutrients make it better (along with the acidic boost).

That is what I've always understood about the 'mother'. I use it intermittently for the budgies, and my avian vet first recommended this to me when Twigs had a little tummy upset, and it really worked!

Well without an avian vet near me (over 2 hour drive) I wanted to know more about this just in case (not in-place-of a seeing a vet or real medication). To be honest though my little green cheek seems to like the taste of vinegary water, he seems much more into drinking water with some ACV in, so I'll probably give him some vinegar water like this occasionally. like how he gets some garlic powder in his food on occasion.

Thank you so much for this thread! I am embarrassed to say that I did not even know there was more than one kind. Great information, and I am going to pick up some of the Mother vinegar.

:( I am so confused lol I did not think you could give ACV to Birds .

I cut / dice up fruit now and then and add to his water just to give him some flavor . Should I also be adding ACV now and then ?

My friend who has a rescue has mentioned to me that she gives ACV once a month, but I never thought to ask her if there were different kinds until I saw this thread.

vinegar is bad for anyone if you have too much. For a bird the normal amount seems to be 1/2 teaspoon or less to a your birds bowl of water and only once or twice a week (unless your avain vet says otherwise), but once a month is what I'll be doing. I've read a few cases of vets, some avian specific, advising owners on adding it to birds water when birds have shown signs of very mild illness but this is no replacement for taking your bird to a vet.

Apple cider vinegar I guess is less harsh than other vinegars but can be sourced in a natural, raw and unfiltered.

Besides that, and what I wrote before, I don't know much else on this.
