Hi guys so last week my macaw's leg got stuck and tangled with another chain and then he sprained his leg. I went to the vet for check up if there was any issue with the bone/any major issue but all seemed fine. His left leg was swollen but the vet said it would heal in weeks time. However the next day after coming back from work there were blood all over his cage and one of his toenail were covered in blood (about half missing) i thought he broke it so cleaned the blood for him and left him in the cage to rest. Today after i came back from work two more toenails were bleeding but not as bad only few drops of blood that i can see on the floor. Realised he chewed it himself.

Can i ask for any of your advise here on what should i do? Im taking him to see the vet tmr but could this be because of his swollen leg ? The vet only gave me cream and some vitamin and calcium last time i went.

Thank you in advance for your reply !

Is there any way you could get your bird in to see the vet today? Is your vet avian certified? I ask because it sounds like the injury to the leg could have caused an infection, that may be why your bird is chewing at his foot. The best advice we can offer is to get your bird in for a thorough exam as soon as possible, keep him warm and keep the leg as clean as possible. Best of luck, please let us know how this turns out.

Though common in Asia ( I am visiting HK and have been to the bird market to see this personnaly) chains on your birds legs are dangerous, as you have now discovered. Please get harness for your macaw, and train with him in its use. Much safer then a leg chain , and will help you and your bird bond a bit more in the training. Good luck and I hope his foot heals well.

Hi thank you, it was the S hook on his leg that was tangled up with the chain I at the swing I put in his cage for him to play. The S hook is to put his chain on while going outside. Yea I guess this is common in asia cuz this is what I was suggested and they dont sell harness here too. Will try to get one and train him on it. After seeing the vet today she said he bit his toenail as a distraction when his leg is in pain. He seems better now today. Thank you so much for your advise!!
