urgent help_mites

Hi from Slovakia,

I would like to ask for an advise as we are facing mites problem right now.

We have pionites leucogaster, male, 22 months old, weight 159 grams.

10 days ago we noticed mites on his skin and in his cage, we found them full of blood. He is sneezing and stratching his skin and nostrils. He has a normal apetit, plays with toys as before.
4 days ago we put 3 drops of SCATT on his leg, 2 days ago another 2 drops on his neck.

Yesterday it seemed he stopped stratching, but today he is doing it again, we´ve found another few mites full of blood. How long does it take until SCATT works?

I don't have experience in this area but I'm hoping your babies are feeling better soon and you can eradicate the mites.

When I first got my Conure years back he had mites and I brought him to the vet who in turn treated him (one treatment only) I then left him in his carrier cage until I steam cleaned his own cage thoroughly. One treatment was all that was necessary. I would be very careful over using any substance on a parrot without getting veterinary advice about it. Hope you get rid of the mite problem soon. I have no other experience of mites nor have I any experience of using a product called Scatt.... I looked but couldnt find a video where Scatt was used on a parrot I did find this one on youtube and it explains the life cycle of the mite and it also states that Scatt stays active in the birds blood stream for up to 3 weeks at which point you repeat the dose so be careful you dont over dose your parrot, putting this on your parrot every couple of days could possibly make it ill ...please be careful. Ihope someone comes on to reply here soon with better information to help you

Hi, thank you for your response, we were not about to give him more drops of that remedy anyway as it can be dangerous I´m just wonderong if it will help... all we can do is wait now, I suppose.

I wouldnt wait I would bring him to a good Avian vet and tell the vet what medication you have used and how much you used and how long ago you used it. I dont want to alarm you but if he has air sac mites they can be very dangerous and can if not treated properly kill your parrot. I was lucky with my Conure that I went to the vet as soon as I got him otherwise I could have lost him if he had not been properly treated for them . My present parrots dont have mites so I have only had my experience with the conure and what the vet told me at the time.
Forgot to add what you have given him should stay in his system fighting against the mite infestation for 3 weeks or 21 days according to the info on the video but you dont know if you have given the correct dose for his weight etc so I do think you should go to your vet and give exact details about the dose you gave him.

The medication only kills those mites on the parrot. You must also start at its cage and work a way from it use a steam cleaner to kill the mites in the cage, the area around the cage and very possible your home! How big an area that will need to be steam cleaned will depend on what you find while cleaning.

Steam clean everything, and consider getting some diatomaceous earth to sprinkle on the carpet around the cage.
