Calcium

Hi All,

Nike eats Zupreem pellets, a few seeds and nuts and some fresh foods daily. She had a calcium bock which came with her when I got her back in December and never touched it. The other day while at the bird store I picked up another block and bolted it near her favorite perch.

She not spends quite a bit of time tearing into it and I'm sure she is digesting some.

Is this normal or is she just playing. Should I be concerned about all the calcium?

It is my understanding if they are eating well / pellets then no they do not need extra. I have never had a calcium block in BB's cage. Now if they diet is special I am not sure. I did find this thread with some information .

I don't offer extra calcium for mine. If you have any doubt, consult with a vet, and perhaps have a basic blood panel to check the level.

What I read recently from the Ultimate Guide to Eclectus is that a majority of calcium from blocks is actually not absorbed. I wouldn't supplement unless bloodwork reveals a need for it.

Oh, and to the point of your thread, I don't give extra calcium, either. Between broccoli, dandelion and crushed eggshells, both my birds get all that they need.

Thanks all. What I was really after more than the calcium was beak conditioning....is there a good safe stone for that...like Manu maybe?

I've got 2 of the Sweet Feet Pumice perches. worked for a couple of months but recently she had little daggers so I got her trimmed. Maybe now that she's trimmed the perch will keep them in check.

For my birds I have one concrete perch in each of their cages. I've found that positioning the concrete perch in front of their food dishes ensures that they'll rub their beaks against them. It starts with cleaning off the beaks, and then progresses to beak sharpening.

Of course, I'm assuming you're referring to keeping the beak trim and at the appropriate length, rather than the nutrients some macaws are said to gain by licking a certain type of clay in Manu.
