Dirty tail

Hi everyone

Ive got a Ringneck whos about 5 months.
Ive only had him about 6 weeks.
He seems well in himself but ive noticed the underside of his tail is dirty. His poos are normal looking and there are none around his bum, just the underside of his tail feathers(all the way down. Hes not tame yet so i dont want to scare him by trying to catch him up if its not needed. Any advise? I did put a tray of water on the bottom of his cage hoping he would maybe have a bath, but he wasnt going anywhere near it! I did think about spraying him with warm water, but dont know if i should.
I would love some advise on what to do x

Well, those more expert than I will be along soon, but meanwhile...

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH, this is one of my pet peeves with my bird. His long, beautiful, bronze tail always used to seem ruffled or dirty. By rearranging perches and placing snacks high off the cagefloor (to reduce his scrubbing around down there) and just in general plotting ways to keep his tail pretty, it's not usually a problem nowadays. Still, I often do battle with him to clean or smooth his tail.

So, if this is just a messiness problem, maybe that might help.

Hopefully no other health or behavior problem is at work.

Brilliant, Thank you sooo much for your advise! It makes sense now, It started when i added in some new branches and looking at them now they are to close, when hes sat on one branch his tail is on the branch below where he eats and rubs his beak to get the fruit off lol. Silly me. Looks like a bit of re arranging needs to be done today.
