Oh my gosh....

I tried giving Kiko a water bottle thing from a pet store, nearly 48 hours ago. THE THING JAMMED UP. I do not know how long he has gone without water for.....the 36 hours maybe?!!!

All the avian vets are closed, there is one over 6 hours away...WHAT DO I DO????

Oh my gosh....I am panicking....

Can he still survive that long without water????

He is acting normal, and had a nice poop before finally getting more water.

Please....PLEASE check the nozzles on the water! Every time you change it!! I changed his twice/three times a day, and just getting it...NEVER CHECKED THE NOZZLES.

I think I may have really checked it just in time...
I know he is dehydrated....
I will IMMEDIATELY bring him in tomorrow morning.
Since he is acting normal, he may be fine until then...

I am so devestated and need support to treat this issue by hand. Oh gosh...

How could I not have seen this?????

Im no vet so I think this is best left to someone with either experience or knowledge on the subject but as I see youre very concerned my 2 cents would be to keep an eye on him and provide a bowl of water rather than bottle, as long as he is acting normal.. if not then absolutely go to the vet, and also provide water.. It is much easier to consume water with a bowl. I know that in this case with a human, one would just be advised to drink water, not too much at once but slowly and steadily, or if needed/wanted given some saline sol. Via IV. I would make sure he drinks water, over the next hour or so, and I would hope he would be okay, if a vet trip isnt possible. Again, Im not a vet but this is what I would do if say a kid or family member was dehydrated. I also would get rid of the bottle. I never liked them because of this possibility but also since the bird cant do anything with the water like with a bowl, ie dunk food. Dunk head or get a little mini bath, etc. Its also easier to drink water in a bowl but I see why bottles are practical as well.

Thanks so much for the response! I hate the water bottles too, but recently he became infatuated with drinking from something like that, so I decided to offer it to him. NEVER will I offer it to him again! I took his bowl right out, and he got five sips in, and is refusing any more.

The think that upsets me is that it seemed to be fine...I changed it multiple times a day, and I just didn't check the nozzle. It doesn't seem stuck, but nothing is coming out.

And I hate to post this, because now I shall be judged horribly.... xs

I am just keeping an eye on him, and he seems fine...but parrots are excellent at hiding nearly everything. His eyes are bright, his feathers are sleek, he's being a busy body, stopping occasionally to visit his mirror. And now he is resting in his signature pose.

I think everything's fine.
On a couple of occasions, the poor Rbird has gone waterless for that long.
Give him a lot of water and I think you're both good to go.
I really like water bowls because of this very possibility...

Thanks so much for the reply!
I truly feel horrible that I never checked it. It is so funny that it malfunctioned the day I decided to try it. xs
I just really feel so bad for him.
I can see he was really thirsty, and I am taking it away now. I think more than 9 sips in an hour may be too much.(?)
I hope he will be fine in the morning.

I think I would be much more concerned if he was acting weird...he has the strength to stand on one foot, and groom. However, I can tell his mouth is dry.

He has had a stool movement twice so far. They looked totally normal, so hopefully he is not severely dehydrated.

I looked for all the dehydration symptoms, and he isn't really displaying any. Other than his mouth being a little dry.

NOPE! No judging here! Take five slow deep breaths of air and release as slowly! Know that you are surrounded by friend!

Sounds like your baby will be fine, also sounds like you deserve a big hug. In case of severe dehydration you can give pedialyte from a dropper and give mist baths, I don't think your bird's condition is that serious yet. Please keep us updated. And toss the water bottle.

GaleriaGia: I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. Just this afternoon, I was like "OMG Kiko has fat little stools! Are they...bulky?"

Thank you so much, Allee and Sailboat!

Thanks for all the support everyone, and understanding mistakes can happen!

I am also just shaken up that things could have ended so much for horribly....he could have been on the bottom of his cage if I hadn't checked the nozzle thingy(if that is what it is called?)

And I just feel so bad that he looked so thirsty.... And when I could hear his little mouth be dry, my heart broke.

And now he is looks ready to sleep, with his little tail sticking up, but in a way I just want to see him active to confirm he is still doing alright. He is acting normal, as far as 6:40 p.m goes.

One last question, does anyone know when I should offer more water? I do not want to offer him too much at a time, and it has been about half an hour since he has had any. Is it a good time to give him some more? A few sips every half hour?

And should I just cover him a little and allow him to just rest with a dimly lit area?

I might be being dumb but shouldn't we provide clean water 24/7?

Another strike for bottles as a lot of people seem to have trouble keeping them clean.

Yes, clean water should be provided 24/7.

However, the issue with bottles is that if people do not carefully look over everything, it can be defective even when people are changing their bird's water 24/7. For example, if everything is cleaned, and the tip of the bottle works, when tilted right side up, but when you put it in the position so a bird could drink it, for some reason it doesn't work properly. So yes, I would say bottles are NOT the way to go. x/

Glad to hear everything is right, and like my post and everyone elses, I think everything will be fine, you just have a thirsty little bird! If he likes those bottles so much, you can always leave it and put a water bowl/dish as well for backup or if he decides he wants to take a splash like my guy does. Also, no one is judging, and if they did, no one has the right too as even the modt experienced people make mistakes, just learn from it. Everyone has made mistakes with their birds, kids, and themselves too. Theres actually a thread right now about mistakes youve.made with your bird - now that everything is okay you can post there and have a laugh and relax. :D

If you are feeding mostly veggie and fruit with a little seed, he may not even need much water, so if he drank some , I wou;d think he will be fine.

Does he eat fruit? Vegetables? Soaked pellets or any other moderate-high moisture foods? If so, he's fine. Parrots get most of their moisture intake from their diet, not drinking it. Now if he is on a dry foods only diet, I would make sure he has water now and keep an extra close eye on him, but if he's acting ok he probably is.

No judging here, I agree with everyone keep your eye on him. I personally would give him pedialyte as allee said. I use it for all my babies. It can be found at the drug store in the baby section. It is for dehydration.

Two cockatiels and a Green Cheek Conure.
To make you feel better: many years ago I had two cockatiels, each in their own cage. I still worked full-time and one day returning home from work, I noticed to my horror that one cockatiel had two bowls of water, and the other had two bowls of food!!!! Couldn't believe I did such a thing and was wondering where my brain must have been that morning. However, none suffered from it!

Update for this morning
Kiko seems better than he was yesterday. Yesterday he seemed fine anyway, nothing seemed up. But he seems even better today.

I made the hard decision and decided not to take him to the vet. It always gives him more stress than he needs, the heater isn't working well in the car, and since he seems fine, I do not want to risk the 4 hour drive.

However, if he looks at ALL worse for wear, he is immediately going to the vet.

He took 11 sips of water last night before bed, and I do not know how much he has had since.

I got pedialyte, but it is flavored citrusy. Is that alright? That was the only one available. It also says it increases zinc levels? This is not okay, right? I have not given him it yet, for this reason.

I have never used the flavoured pedialyte, but I am sure it would be fine. Give your vet a call and ask first. I have heard people use gatorade for dehydration as well, but again I haven't. A small amount of zinc in their food is required remain healthy. The zinc found in food is different than the heavy-metal zinc that is toxic to birds. You will only need a few drops at a time. Hopefully someone else will chime in soon to confirm. It sounds like he is doing okay though. If he is drinking, eating and his poop seems normal, I would say you are okay, but keep your eye on him. (I can tell you are keeping a close watch) ;)

Thanks for the story, Reni! It does help a little!

Thanks, Quakerella! I think the reason why he seems fine is because he was never a big drinker. And being a desert parrot may have helped as well. His poop seems normal, the same size as ever. He is vibrant and active, he can blink fine, and his mouth doesn't seem dry anymore. I can't really 'handle' him though, because he will panick.
