Oh, y'all, I need your thoughts.

Today, mid-afternoon, I let the Rb loose after his nap, and noticed that he had a runny nose... both nares! When he was under a year old, he sometimes had this, and my vet said it was apparently an allergy or maybe even picking his nose (he loves to do that). Then it went away (at least as far as I'm aware) for 30 years.

There's no way he's malnourished. This bird is on Harrison's High Potency and has a variety of fresh stuff, including multiple chile peppers, every day.

I can't think of ANY difference in environment or experience.

Poop, activity level, behavior is all within normal limits. He wasn't scratching or picking at his nares.

If there's any REPEAT, it's straight to the vet's ASAP.

He has had not a sniffle nor significant injury in all this time. I'm spoiled, right??? Yes. Maybe even complacent. I did not handle this well. If he's sick, I will need a lot of love...

Meanwhile... what do y'all think??????????

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Oh Gail, sorry to hear this. You are not complacent!!

Was the discharge clear, or with a tint? If it clears up by tomorrow morning, it may be a fluke or allergy. If not, I'd recommend a trip to the vet.

Please let us know!!

It was clear... no redness or swelling anywhere around the nares. It had the same slightly salty smell that it had when he was a baby.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor little Rbird! Hopefully he's not I'll and just had a random booger!
I can tell you that one day Bella sneezed and had clear mucus from one nare, I figured she'd just got a bit of dust or something in there and it was just her body trying to shift it. She hasn't had a runny nose since. So hopefully the Rbird has just had a little something irritate his beaky nose a bit.
Let us know how he is tomorrow!

Gail, close watch on the RBs nostrils. Salty got a nasal infrection a few weeks fter we brought him home that required antibiotics in the nore for a few weeks. iT WAS NOT FUN GIVING IT TO HIM, BUT DID CLEAR IT UP.
Really close watch. We would hate to see the RB sick.

THANK YOU!

I'll sit up with him in the dark... I did this 32 years ago when I bought him and brought him home and had to wait for the cage to be delivered the next day. He sat on my shoulder all night. But tonight he's in his cage and I'll be on the floor on an air mattress which I keep in his room for special occasions.

Please be okay, Rickeybird.

Maby the air in the house is to dry.
Than the nasal passage will produce much muces to create moisture. It can causing an infection.
You feed Harrisons, so the vitamines A is o.k. (vitamine A is responsable for the condition of body soft tissues.)
Gail, I think you get Rbird to the vet for treatment.
In the mean while steam with hot water in front of him.
I hope my sweet friend is getting better soon. I keep my fingers crossed for him and of course for you . Please let me know how he is doing.

Marileen... I brought upstairs a small humidifier unit that I use for me sometimes... he loves it. Clicking and strutting and swaggering for it...
I'm jealous.
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If he's not better tomorrow.........................OFF TO THE VET, I PROMISE.
Okay, I'm signing off to go sleep with him.

If you sleep near him will that keep him awake? We had problems with Ollie, don't be scared, it took a long time to worsen. His nose was so runny for so long that he developed granulomas, solid boogers, and those eventually led to an infection, but it took years. He had a pre-existing condition, an old asper infection. The vet advised keeping a humidifier going near him and it seemed to help. My own allergies kicked up the last week, too. I hope it's a minor thing and he will be right as rain tomorrow.

I hope everything turns out fine. Good to keeo an eye on him especially with his age things can happen fast! Loco seems to think a kissy sound is a sneeze, and also does a rapid sneeze when mad which used to scare me but he has been fine. Rarely does anything come out and when it does its clear and like water, so good that theres no discharge. Stay positive!

Kentuckienne... good points... I sleep in his room occasionally... when MOUSE-age is suspected, for example, or new fireworks nearby...

Thank you for your care!

I'm on my phone now, on the mattress, and he is sound asleep.

Your likely sleeping, but just as likely not! More than likely have an eye open, watching for any difficult breathing, and an ear listening for any breathing stress!

And, you're just as likely keeping an eye on the Parrot Forum, just in case!

This is commonly a very difficult time of year for our Parrots as the Sun Time Day chances. And, here in the Great White North our homes are changing as the heating systems rob the air of its lessening Humidity. Add to all of that, any home with a forced air system is now pushing all that sediment out of the system and into the body of the home. FYI: General statement folks, change your filters!

So, a clear bit of a runny nose can happen.

Yes, the Humidifier will help, but it takes time. Sometimes, depending on the layout of the Home and the design of the forced air system, a week! This time of year, up to 24 hours.

Having been here enough, myself, I can tell you that I am more comfortable with what you have defined than what I have dealt with and survived. That said, the night is never easy, but knowing that you have a depth of close friends - let it bring you comfort My Good Friend!!!

I'm so sorry Rickeybird has a runny nose. Gail, I hope he has a good night's sleep and feels fine when he wakes up.

Feel better soon, Sweet Boy! We are all sending you skritches and good wishes and lots of hugs for your mom!

Gail, I keep trying to think of advice for you, but I think Al ruined it. All I can keep thinking about is what he said he had to do with Salty, and I keep trying to picture you giving the Rbird antibiotics in his nose...

Honestly, I think it's probably most likely either dry air, or dust or something got in his nose and bothered it, but better safe than sorry. I am glad to hear that you will take him to the vet if it's still running in the morning. Hopefully all is well, and Chicken sends RB her love.

How's RB's snotty nose this morning?

Archie was on antibiotics last week as he was a bit chesty but he's all good now. Our vet said humidity can help. The easiest way is to get the bathroom steamy and then take him in there [emoji4]

Our old boys are a worry aren't they. I'm sure RB just had something up his nose.

Love to you xx

Sailboat, LeaKP, Allee, Spirit, Nicky...

Rb is completely fine today! Dry 'nose', his usual awful self, thank GOODNESS (badness?).

I, on the other hand, am half-asleep and sleepy but OMG relieved. Put a call in to vet for his thoughts, but I suspect he'll tell me to chill.

Thank you all so much. I really did not feel alone.

Sorry I freaked out on everybody. Of course, I'd do it again...
