Meeko a male 6 year old white-bellied caique
Hello, I am wondering if anyone may know about a nose bump. My caique Meeko had this little bump on his left nostril when I got him from his previous owners. I have taken him to the vet for it and nothing they have given us has helped it, I have just noticed it is getting wider and I will take him to the vet ASAP but I was wondering if anyone knows about this problem.
I will attach a picture of it, but it is from about 2 months ago after a bath. It looks about the same now just wider.
Thank you!

It could be a cyst or a tumor or something else. The threads about lumps I've found so far are:
http://www.parrotforums.com/macaws/24120-bump-face.html
http://www.parrotforums.com/general-health-care/27940-white-lump.html
http://www.parrotforums.com/conures/22563-bump-between-eye-beak.html
I don't know if anything therein is actually useful, but it does show that bumps aren't unheard of. I'd definitely be inclined to request a biopsy after removal of any unidentifiable lump that has failed to respond after other diagnosis and treatment. Please let us know what happens. Good luck

Thank you for those links, I agree with you, maybe a cyst or tumor. I think it is in a good spot for that though, not near anything that could hurt him too bad. I will bring him to the vet soon and let you know, definitely will do a biopsy, I am curious if this could be something major. Thank you!

When you brought him to the vet did they try puncutring it or doing a biopsy to see if its a simple fluid buildup/cyst or something more serious like a tumor? Could just be something minor that needs a drain.

No, they did not and I am very disappointed they didn't. I didn't have much concern for it then and the vet thought it was a sinus infection. I will suggest maybe it is something that could be drained because it does feel soft, maybe it is just fluid. Thank you!

If he's had it that long then I doubt it's a bacterial infection, as he'd be very sick by now. Hopefully it's a fluid cyst, I'm sure the vet will try to aspirate it, and if fluid does come out generally that's a good sign that it's not anything malignant. Then they will send the fluid out for a culture, and the cyst should go away quickly. If it is a solid, fibrous mass (tumor) you'll want to make sure they send a needle biopsy out for pathology...I wish you both the best of luck...does it bother him at all? Does he pick at it, or does it ever appear red or inflamed?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Is Meeko's vet an avian specialist? Hopefully it is nothing of great concern.

I agree, he would be sick if it was and no he does not pick at it, it does not bother him at all. I can poke it and it doesn't bother him so it isn't uncomfortable. I will definitely ask for it to be biopsied if they are unclear of what it is. Thank you for the info! I hope all is well for my Meeko :)

His vet is, but I don't think she showed any concern because I didn't. Hopefully she has the ability to see what it is.

Just curious, are you in southeast Florida? If so there are two very good vets I know of.

No, on the far east coast of Florida :( I am looking into a vet about an hour from me right now I have read good things about :)

I have no idea, but when faced with an unresolved issue I have two trusted vet sources and I think both will do phone consultations if you are not in proximity. One is Dr. Brian Speer at The Medical Center for Birds - Oakley, CA - and the other is Dr. Todd Cecil at Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of San Diego Pet Emergency Service Center.

That's very helpful, thank you!

come to think of it, you can also check out AAV online. Association of avian veterinarians. They have a referal list on their website. good luck!

Any update on getting him to a different avian vet to get this diagnosed? I was thinking about him, the poor little guy. The sooner you get it diagnosed the better. If nothing else, could you take him back to your regular avian vet, but this time make the appointment specifically for the lump and ask her to aspirate/biopsy it? I'm sure she didn't do it the first time because you weren't concerned about it at that point, as you said, but looking at the photos the lump is definitely large enough now that she should be very concerned about it too. If it isn't painful and doesn't bother him at all when it's touched, then it's definitely not an infection of any kind, though it could very well develop into an infection on top of whatever it actually is if it's not treated soon.
