Not again. I'm super stressed.

If you recall, back in January I had this issue:

http://www.parrotforums.com/general-health-care/66491-positive-thoughts-i-m-freaking-out.html

The vet determined his crop was inflamed from overeating, but to watch him. He seemed to get better with good food management.

Then my son's little budgie died, and I paid for a necropsy to make sure there wasn't anything contagious going on. That was in addition to all the blood work and fecal tests and stuff the week before that I had done for an initial check up. Absolutely nothing showed up in the lab work and my vet determined that it was just maladaption and couldn't have been prevented.

Well, today, Leo isn't doing well. He's sleeping all day, his balance his bad, he's all poofed up and his appetite is bad. He has an appointment at 5:40 to see the vet. I'm in tears. I can't handle another loss. Especially not Leo. He's my first birdie love and my favorite. Hopefully whatever this is, it's easily treatable.

The vet is keeping him overnight at least. He got blood work and started fluids. He will call me as soon as he gets any kind of diagnosis.

Thank you. Dr. J. said that the first of the blood work should be back in about an hour or so, so I should have an idea of what's going on tonight before the day staff leaves. Leo is my first love. He can't get sick. It's not allowed.

His basic labs are back. He's a very sick little birdie. His white blood cell count is extremely high (I can't recall if he said 1600 or 16,000). He's got some sort of bacterial infection, so they're starting antibiotics and might keep him another day. For now, he's not worried about the other birds, so I can relax a little bit.

Thank you. Wrench, yeah, my vet is excellent. He's got a reputation for being one of the best AV's in the country, and it's a well deserved reputation.

I was looking through pictures I took today. I regret not being pushier about coming in a few hours sooner. He had a few more symptoms of being really sick than I initially noticed. His eyes were pretty dry looking and his tail feathers were pointing down more than they should have been. A few hours sooner to get him on fluids would have been better, but hopefully that will turn out okay anyway.

I'm just so worried. This one is my baby. I'd be upset if anything happened to any of my birds, but Leo is just special.

The important thing is that you noticed and you did the right thing, and now he is getting the care he needs. Your other birds are safe and you know what direction to move in. We are all pulling for you. Keep us posted.

I just got off the phone with the vet's office. Leo has eaten a little bit this morning, isn't fluffed up, and is much livelier than he was yesterday. Dr. J. is on the late shift, so when he gets in around 11am, he'll decided if Leo can come home or if he needs to stay another day.

Oh Beatrice, I'm sorry Leo suddenly became ill. You know he is in the very best of hands with Dr. J. That Leo has improved this morning is great progress, and hopefully by afternoon he will be well enough to return home!

Last year one of my Goffins developed a rapid-onset infection with lime-green droppings and extremely high WBC count. An aggressive course of injectable and oral antibiotics cured him quickly. A reminder no matter how diligent we are, the microscopic world is full of surprises.

Go, Leo!

I understand how you feel about Leo, Beatrice. He's your Rickeybird. I love all my animals, but... you know.

Dr. J.'s tech just called. Dr. J. wants to keep him for observation the rest of the day, but I can pick up him after 5pm today! He'll need a hospital cage set up at home, and he'll be on antibiotics for a week or two, but I'm so excited that he's well enough to be coming home!

And when it rains it pours. This is just how my life works. I've had to make an urgent doctor's appointment for a sick kid, and don't know if I'll be able to pick up Leo before the office closes. Also, with this much going on, I'm fearful that trying to nurse a sick kid and a sick bird, I might miss something, so I'm going to leave Leo at the vet's office one more night. He's in excellent hands, will get his meds on time, and if any subtle signs of illness get worse, they'll catch it right away. So I won't pick him up until tomorrow. I'd rather have everybody home, but it's better this way.
