Pico - yellow sided GCC
Hello all, first and foremost I will start by saying that I am taking Pico to the vet later today when he wakes up. I don't know if I am just being paranoid or if something is up but I'm going to be safe rather than sorry.
so I went to visit my dad for 4 days during this holiday break and left Pico with my mom (her and Pico get along great and she knows everything on how to take care of him) I texted her every day asking about how he was doing and every day she responded that he is being very loving and sweet. which is great!
but yesterday I got back and I don't know if it's because we spent a few days away from each other but his voice sounded a little different when I was talking to him. just kind of coarse and maybe not as sharp. so I looked at him carefully and I swear his feet seemed a little more pale than normal. just a little less pink.
I asked my mom if she noticed anything different about him or his behavior while I was gone and she said no, and that he has been singing and playing like normal and giving lots of love. she knows his personality very well but still I don't know.
So I took him back to my own house and I noticed that he is shifting weight on his feet a little bit more than he normally does. I know it's normal for conures to be on one foot when they feel comfortable and safe. but I know him and I feel like he doesn't normally do it as much as he was last night. additionally, he's been acting super super sweet and loving to me. granted he is always sweet and loving but last night it just seemed a little extra. he was just absolutely in cuddle and love mode. I don't know if it's because he missed me or if this is a change in behavior. the last thing I noticed is that when I cleaned and filled his water bowl when we got home then he drank kind of excessively. I don't know if it's just because I'm watching his every move super carefully or if he was increasing his water intake.

obviously I google searched everything and I did see some mild concern here and there about the things I am describing. however I don't know if I basically just did the whole "oh let me google my one strange symptom..and oh my goodness now according to webmd i'm dying" type deal? so naturally I just came here lol.
his voice and any feet discoloration are not of a concern anymore. everything looks normal. no eye or nose discharge. he is playing and eating like normal. poop looks pretty standard to me but I will check again when he gets up this morning. no bobbing of any sort (head or tail) and I haven't noticed any sign of his breathing being different. but I'm keeping a close eye.
apologies if I sound ridiculous but if anyone has any input that would be great!

also - I am a poor college kid but I do have an emergency cash stash for Pico. with that being said any recommendations on tests would be great. I just don't want to go above and beyond if it's not necessary

thanks y'all and sorry this is so long

Thank-you, for the detailed Thread!

First, Stop Texting! Your Parrot would have loved to hear your voice while you were gone! Parrots cannot hear let alone read a Text! Video calling is even better.

Second, It is really iffy regarding whether you should go to an Avian Vet or not. The common /standard response is: It is always safer too go than to loose your Parrot.

Third, there could be a difference in the water between your location and your mothers and that may explain the want for more water when home.

Forth, your mother may have the temperature cooler at her home, which may explain the lighter color and difference in voice.

I cannot see your Parrot, nor do I have a known history with your Parrot. As you know, Parrot are great at hiding their illness. It's your call! For me, I just go, its forty dollars for most basic walk-ins with much more costs with Blood and gram stain tests.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Great advice from Sailboat! It is always helpful to be observant, and you have noticed some subtle and diverse changes.

How long since the most recent vet visit and basic lab tests? While health can vary literally in an instant, time proximity to the last check is a factor. Perhaps most important with the vagueness of symptoms is the experience and ethics of your vet. A highly competent avian vet can judge how deeply to explore, and balance the necessities with your budget. Others will recommend the most intensive workup without regard to the likelihood of seriousness. A difficult decision, but the best advice when in doubt is to at least schedule an office visit.

Thank you guys!
Pico woke up about two hours ago and i'm not having any worries anymore. I think I just freaked myself out because it was my first time seeing him in a few days and I just took one thing and ran with it. googling sick bird symptoms didn't help at all. he is no longer standing on one foot or over drinking water. perhaps he was just happy to be home with the whole one foot thing and was displaying comfortability with being home :) also he pooped completely normal as soon as he woke up so that's always good! lol
I loved your suggestions and ideas sailboat. you really thought those out!
I honestly never even considered talking to Pico on the phone for some reason. I guess I just never thought about how he would know it's me! but i'm sure he would.
I really am loving all the extra love he is giving me, I guess he did just miss me after all. But the googling I did had me all spazzed out about any changes in behavior.
Scott, it's been just about 7 months! so we are still going to go to the vet anyway. I really didn't like the feeling of being worried about his health and it's about that time anyhow. I just didn't want to bring him in with the mindset of doing anything I could to make him better and ending up blowing big bucks for no reason.
thanks again y'all
