Hi all as you can see this is my first post. My problem is with my OWA his poop has turned very runny it comes out like turning on a garden hose, and the smell is terrible. This has only been happening for the last 2 weeks previously his poop was normal. His diet consists of fresh apple, tangerine, and shelled peanuts he also has an addiction for the seed sticks that are available from my local pets at home store these he gets 1 every 3 days or so. Now before someone says visit the vet i need to find one that can handle him, as he was a badly abused rescue bird that i took from an alcoholic who constantly threw things at the cage. My local vet saw him once and got bitten very bad so he wont like to see him again, so there is my problem hope someone has had a bird with this problem. thanks

Hi there - welcome :) My advice to you is to go to the local pharmacy (drug store) and get rescue drops. Phone your vet and get an appoinment, if you want to change vets do so. Give the rescue drops about 10 minutes before the vet handles your bird. It really helps and calms the bird down. Get you bird to the vet ASAP!!!! It doesnt matter if the vet gets bitten - that comes with the job - lol. Please, your bird will get dehydrated and it will damage their liver and kidney. You need to get your parrot onto a proper diet which the vet can advise you on. Pellets are the best with a mix of fruit and veg daily. Peanuts is not enough and there is too much fruit been given and not a balance between fruit and veg.

I hope this helps....if you decide to go to the vet tell him/her what your feeding your parrot and no antibiotics must be given unless blood is taken to decipher if there is a problem and what it is.

I personally think its the diet your feeding your amazon but Im not a vet and they will be able to advise you on pellet brands and balance between the requirements he/she needs daily.

Hope this helps :)

The diet is not good, but if the runny poop is a sudden change for the bird, something is wrong. Bird poop doesn't and shouldn't smell...I'd get him to the vet...quickly.

Jessica is right on. Your birds poop is not normal nor is the diet. Drop the seed stick because of the honey (too sweet) and drop the peanuts. If you can feed your bird some plain or vanilla yogurt from a spoon. That with the rescue remedy drops may help. If not a visit to an avain vet is in order and they know how to protect themselves from a bite.

Thanks for all the replys guys the foods that he is getting just now is the same with variances that he has had for the last 5 years he does get some veg like carrot and lettuce. So i would have thought the prob would have shown up before now also he looks and plays in his cage as normal there is no noticable difference in his behaviour. Also these rescue drops what exactly are they and how are they administered. thankyou.

You just put a few drops in the birds water. Lettuce is not the best food for birds but the dark green leafy ones are best. Kale, and the like.

The smell is what concers me most, I would suggest a vet visit as soon as possible, you may try this one, or maybe they can refer you to another avian vet if their not available....good luck.

Thankyou bobby34231 it turns out that vets surgery is about 10 mins drive from home. I dont normally have to use vets as our pets have always stayed healthy until they pass on. Thankyou again

Please be sure this vet is an avain vet. Others just do not know how to handle our precious birds.

Ok have been to speak to the vet this morning and i have to take tony to see them at 3pm this afternoon. Now i have to shorten the height of his cage to fit it in my estate car (station wagon to our american friends) lol, so it should be fun as this bird will resist all attempts to being handled. Lmao how does a vet do his job with missing fingers.. Will keep you informed with results. Thank you for your help.

Ok just back from the vets. The vet took some droppings to his lab and confirmed a bad yeast infection other than that the droppings are ok, the yeast infection is the cause of the bad, horrible, horrid smell that now pollutes my car. Also once we managed to get a hold of tony we found an open wound between his vent and tail feathers it is an ulcer or growth i prefer the first one. Vet took a swab of the wound and checked with microscope and it loaded with infection. So i have to spray the wound twice daily with something called (Fio sc, this appears to be an abreviation ) also orally tony has to get Intrafungal and baytril applied on a grape or similiar, also avipro plus added to his water, and a return to vet next monday at 10am. So hopefully there will be an improvement and less smell. Thank you for all your help guys..

I didn't want to interject anything further in the last post because you didn't mention any lessions in conjuction with the odor from the droppings, as you probably didn't see them, I'm not a vet and am not there to see what your describing, I'm just wondering if the vet also looked inside the mouth of your bird, the fowl smelling feces along with lessions in the oral cavity as well as on the body, (usually close to the vent), appearing as a wart like growth or if clustered may appear cauliflower looking are some symptoms of Papillomatosis which is most common in south american parrots, macaws, amazons ect., as I've stated i am not a vet, but I have seen this disease before, and in speaking with my avian vet at the time he had mentioned that it is often overlooked by many vets who are not familiar with avian diseases, if your bird doesnt respond well to the meds that your vet prescribed, (as antibiotics dont work against viral infections) I would ask him about Papillomatosis on your next upcomming vist, I hope i'm totally off base here and it is just a yeast infection.....please keep us up to date :)

Oh forgot to say vet checked eyes, throat and all were all clear the smell is from the droppings not the wound. The vet thinks the yeast infection was iritating the vent and tony was rubbing it on the perch, which we had seen him do and stopped him as we thought he was masterbating and the rubbing or abrasion has broken the skin..

Ouch, hope that looks worse than it is, poor guy, well I guess we'll see what a week on the meds will do, hopefully the smell will go away and the wound will at least begin to heal, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery :)

Im so glad that the vet could diagnose what was wrong and give you the correct meds. If there is any anitbiotics involved make sure you give probiotics to help the good bacteria. Your bird wont know himself in a week or two - the pain will be gone and he will so much better! Did the rescue drops help at all? If you find he is getting restless with cleaning everyday put one drop in his mouth - he will calm down immediately and be less stressed. You can then give rescue in the water daily to keep him calm. Keep us posted :)
