Commonly, one wants to watch for a moist nostril that would indicate a infection. When moist, particles in the air can become logged and result in the area appearing dark.

Just because the area is dark does not mean that it is a result of an infection or moisture as this area can even when dry collect particles in the air and appear darkened. Normally, they will sneeze and that will flush the area clean.

Just to drive their Humans nuts, Parrots will some time rub their nostrils on a dark surface (perch(s), etc...) that will release particles that will cause the nostrils to be darker than usual.

Although rare, check for minor cuts caused by the above rubbing that may have resulted in very minor bleeding that has become darkened as it drys. Normally, this will have a crusty appearance.

In the Great While North of North America during the later part of Winter. It is very common for Parrots to have darkened nostrils resulting from very dry air and the electrical charge, which increases the collection of particles in the air.

Most Parrots will as a result of a good bath /shower /etc... will clean this area as a droplet of water passes over the head and the nostril area. Commonly followed by a good sneeze.

Watch for any other signs of a heath problem (infection). If you pick-up on any signs of infection - its a fast trip to the CAV (Certified Avian Vet).

FYI: If with a bath it does not clear-up, a CAV can flush the area and that will clean what every has built-up!
