Sterretjie arrived at my house with lots of stress lines, broken feathers and a couple of her tail feathers are burned. Last night when I got home I found her with ALL her tail feathers broken right at the top. :( They are now standing like peacock feathers.

I dont know much about feathers, are the feathers weak because of the diet that she was on when they developed? Or what else can explain this?

Will all this broken feathers be a big problem?

I so wish she will start molting.:(

Awwwwww little Sterretjie has been through so much. Does she get night frights in her cage? That could cause issues with feathers. If there is no bleeding or signs of pain she may take care of the bent feather herself. I would not fool with it myself.

Hey Linky,

You said burned - do you mean like burnt - fire??? Lol - sorry, may be have a doff moment ;) SB is right - if there is no bleeding let Ster preen herself. If bleeding starts get her to a vet or if she shows signs of being unhappy and in pain. Hugo was always in the war zones and he would also wake up with feathers all over the show - he would preen and sort himself out :)

Wildheart my little Amos has a broken tail feather as well, I think I'll leave it alone unless it starts to bother him.
not to jump in on another thread but it caught my eye because I noticed Amos has some broken tail feathers... but what are these night frights you mentioned? I ask because one night, out of the blue, everything was quiet, and Amos flipped out in his cage! He was sound asleep, and BOOM, he came flipping out of his happy hut, rattled around the cage and then, froze like he was in shock or something. Is this what that was? Is this common?

Yes Jess burned with fire.

It definitely does not bother her, she still plays and carry on like always although she looks TERRIBLE. ALL the tail feathers are broken at the top - I mean ALL of them. I want to know if there is something like weak feathers?

Tannie Spiritbird it wasnt a night fright, she was fine in the morning and I found her like that when I got home after work yesterday.

Jodi, yours does sound like a night fright. You can put a night light near the cage, they sell it in the reptile section. ;)

Hey Linky,

Im sorry if I made you mad but Im so confused - when did she get burnt??? Was she like that when you got her??? Im having a vision here of you coming back from work yesterday and finding her mysteriously burnt??? Forgive me for not understanding. There is something such as weak feathers. It is caused by bad nutrition when they develop as babies. Hugo had weak feathers because of the upbringing he had. You can give them vit/min supplements to assist in their feather growth etc.

Broken feathers can be caused by a combination of things, including malnutrition, stress, flight accidents, and nightfrights. Just keep an eye on what she eats and what she doesn't eat, because she might be picky eater. Picky eaters often don't get the nutrition they need.

LoL now I am confused as well. I had better broaden my knowledge regarding feather's if i want to add to this thread

Jess, I think what Linky was referring to when saying
broken feathers and a couple of her tail feathers are burned is a "manner of speech"

I think we can all learn a thing a thing or two reading the link below

Wildheart that is so sad the shape she was in when you got her :( how awful!!

Thank you for the link :) he has not had any since that night, and everything was fairly new to him still...
I will start with a night light from now on. We usually do have a little light shining in the room, but maybe it was not enough.

thank you!!

Jess, why do you think I am angry at YOU???

The  was at her previous owners.

Ant it is not a matter of speech - when I found her in my garden she already had lots of broken feathers and some of her tail feathers are burnt. You just did not see it because we only see her beauty and nothing else. I'll show you next time. For those who do not know Sterretjie's history, her leg was also broken on 3 places and the previous owners left it to grow on the wrong way around. :( Her chest bone did not form properly either and she is very small in comparison to other IRNs.

Luckily I do not have a picky eater - Sterretjie devours everything that I put in front of her - as if she was never fed before. She does not only eat mornings and nights like most other birds - she eats through the whole day.

So there is something like weak feathers, I thought as much. Thanks!

Now if she will just start to molt so we all can see how beautiful her colours really are.

HAHAHAHAHA - ok, I completely lost the plot there. Sorry Links - hahahaha....I was in such a state because I thought maybe I had misread the word burned and you were upset because I would even suggest your precious child being burned. I then went back to look at pics of Ster and couldnt see anything which made things worse because then I was worried you would think I was implying that Ster was burnt a day or two ago and all you were worrying about was her feathers sticking up. I was horrified that you would misunderstand!!!!!

HAHAHAHA - You were speaking in the past and I just couldnt figure out what was going on - DOFFFFF MOMENT!!!!! All I can say is that Ster looks great and you have done an amazing job with her :D:D

I also think that with her leg she is more prone to bumping her feathers...sweet lil gal!!! :) When that owner dies one day his/her book of life will be brought forward and the abuse of Ster will be there in bold - they will be judged!!!!!!

I do hope that is the way it goes!

I was a little confused also...with this thread. I just waited for someone else to ask the questions, as I'm fairly new...I haven't heard Sterretjie's story.

Ag no I am sorry, I did not know that I wrote it confusing. :(

I was outside in the garden and then noticed that a parrot was sitting on my iguana aviary. I went to fetch a chair and climbed up to see her properly. She was very scared but did not fly away. I stayed there and talked and talked, I promised her that I will look after her and will give her everything that will make her happy. I asked my daughter to go and fetch some bread for me and I held it out to her.

After more than a half an hour of begging she started to approach me. She ate some of the bread and I held my hand closer and closer to me. She eventually climbed on my hand I walked into the house. Here is a photo of that day that my daughter took:

Since then we've been through hell and back with behavioral problems etc. etc. but she is 80% better! :D She was abused and neglected, she was afraid of absolutely EVERYTHING especially pillows, brooms, books and towels.
