Advice, please ! I went to spray Salty with some water to cool how down a bit and cut he had some dried droop on him. I accidentally grabbed the sprayer for poop off, and only realized it after a dozen or so sprays. I immediately put him in the shower and soaked him good but he has been sitting in his cage, not really moving, and with his eyes closed. I flushed his eyes again with the hand sprayer, made SURE it was water. My vet is closed and I put a call into their emergency #, but no call back so far. Is this stuff toxic, I would guess no, but I know it's not meant for direct application. Help , please from one of our more experience members, please! I'm going out of my mind with worry.

Al, I found the MSDS for Poop-Off but it's not very helpful:
http://lifesgreatproducts.com/msds/pomsds.pdf

I checked the MSDS for the related Poop Off Marine product, also not that helpful, but both products claim to be nontoxic. Life's Great Product says Poop Off is safe enough to use with the bird inside the cage. As far as I can glean from the MSDS, the main ingredient is biological enzymes to digest the poop. I use the stuff, and to me it smells slightly of ammonian, but the pH is listed as 7, neutral. Says it can be an eye irritant to sensitive individuals. Do you think any got in Salty's eye? I know from lab days it takes at least 10, as much as 20, minutes under running water to flush harmful materials from the human eye. But this isn't a bad chemical...maybe the chlorine in the water is just as irritating. Can you possible run distilled or spring or Britta etc. water over his head in a slow stream? He might hate it..the spraying of water isn't enough to flush out all the contaminants.

Al, did you follow rule one with spraying Parrots! Never spray them in the face?

With a neutral based chemical, the biggest concern is the head: Eyes, Ears, and Mouth! If you did not spray the head, what you have done with rising water is great. At this point, its keeping a share eye on those feature of his head and listening to his breathing.

Short of additional raising, not recommended at this point! You are going to have to wait!

What you are looking for: Eyes, reddening and other signs of irritation. Ears: normally the feathers will keep stuff out. Be careful of over rising in those areas. The month, signs of irritation and more importantly labored breathing /clicking /or tail pumping.

Keep us posted good friend!

Just finished a 10 min shower with him, water carefully tried to get his eyes only because I app entry did get some in his eyes. In the shower where he kept them closed half the time, his lower eye lid is red. Help! Is there any eye soothing anything I can put in his eyes to sooth the irritation? God I'm so f'ing stupid, making that dumb mistake. He is in his cage drying off, for the third time. Not interesting in eating his dinner, but will take treats. God dam vet never called back, wait til I get a hold of Dr Davis! Anyone got a emergency line I can call?

You need to get him out of that cage and on to you! He likely thinks he is being punished and that needs to be changed to he is being up-close and loved by you!

- Being on you comforts him!
- Being on you confirms that he is not being punished!
- Being on you, you can get an on-going update as to how he is doing!

So, get him out of the cage and onto you! All night if needed - by either or both of you!

I agree with Salboat. Just watch for obvious signs of distress re: head area. I did the exact same thing as you with my Alexandrine....soaked him good too. I rinsed him off in the sink. Right now, given the number of times you have bathed him, my guess would be that is stressing him out more than the poop-off. Take a deep breath and give him a chance to settle, reassess him and keep checking the vet. Is it possible to call one further away just to get advice or find an online source?

There are eye drops, but I'm not sure which one. A neutral wash, like that used for contact lenses. - the type used to place the contact, NOT clean it! NOT Recommending it, only targeting.

Note: For your 'comfort' locate a 24' Emergency Care Facility! They will likely have some idea and have an neutral eye solution on-hand.

Lots of friends here Al! Thinking of You Good Friend!

He has settled down and is in his cage for the night. He ate a little bit too. No trick training tonight, though I did give him fair amount of treats, which he gladly ate, so he can't be doing that bad. Such a stupid, dumb mistake to make. I can't believe that I hurt my little Salty. Oh morning you can't come too soon for me.

Good Morning Salty!

You have a huge family of friends and well wishers here that had been wishing you comfort last night.

Please do not be overly unhappy with your Dad, all those rough showers had been intended to help comfort you and not upset you!

Let Dad hold you near and the two of you can spend a long day together.

Poor Salty, so many showers in one day. Wondering if it is a good idea to see the AV anyway as my concern is Salty's eyes?

Hopefully Salty will forget all about this by morning. Everybody makes mistakes, and mistakes are not intentional. I think somehow our animals understand intention...they know when something is directed in anger, and when it is unintentional. Salty is so connected to you, don't you think? Being upset with you would be like being upset with himself. I think it's great that you shared the experience with the forum - with the search button, or just with the eyeballs on the active threads today, you might have saved another parrot. I'll be watching for the update saying Salty is fine.

He gets up at 10 am, but I might push that a bit as we are so concerned . I had a horrible dream last night, which I won't even go into. I just peeked under his cover, and he is still sleeping (and not lying on the bottom of his cage, thank you Lord). Thanks also to the support from our friends here on the parrot forums. I will advise everyone when he wakes up.

Good news. Salty appears ok, to have not suffered from my stupidity yesterday. His eyes look clear and not cloudy or anything . He is not bumping into stuff, or seem distressed. Salty even accepted a wake up scratchie. I am going to be home all day, and he will be with me every second, except for bathroom breaks. Shows you what he's made of, shaking off everything from yesterday. I just hope there will not be long term damage to his eyes, but they look ok, his eye lids are not red anymore. Thanks every one for the support and concern.

With your experience level, to make such a mistake, is a wake up call for all of us! A simple lapse in focus, and stuff happens!
Am very happy all is now good!

if it helps for the future...Ollie always is quiet for a couple hours while he's drying after a shower. I think when they are completely soaked like that they feel very scared of predators. I am glad Salty is looking fine. i bet he's never had the chance of showering so many times in one day before.
