Our B&G macaw had two scary bumps appear on her cheek yesterday. They look like they could be some sort of infection. Going to get her into the avian vet asap but with the holiday the earliest would be tomorrow. Anyone have any idea what it could be? She is acting completely normal and eating. She is somewhere between 15-25 years old according to our vet. We adopted her from the animal shelter I work at in May. Any help appreciated!

A quick inflamation would be more indicative of infection or cyst rather than a growth. Your AV will readily determine the nature, hopefully nothing serious. If he continues as normal throughout the day, waiting until tomorrow should be OK. Short of catastrophe, he is better served by seeing an AV rather than an emergency general-purpose vet.

I fully agree with Scott!

Not sure how far you are from you AV or what your schedule is, but assume that there will be tons of people calling in for an emergency appointment.

I'm a really pain in the bottom when my Amazon is in need of care. I get to the Clinic when the Techs are coming in and get them to look at my parrot and if needed call the AV. I commonly get in quickly, cause I'm a pain in the bottom. :D

Ever seen a Mother with an injured toddler! I have seen that look in my dear lady's eyes and rarely do those on the other side of the counter deny her. Those fools that do pay deeply!

Infections in that area are not to be taken lightly! Way to much going on below the surface not to be pushy regarding getting care at your AV.

Thank you guys! We have an appointment first thing tomorrow morning (our vet wasn't in today) I will post back with what they think. Praying it's nothing major!

Home from the AV! Dr wasn't too concerned and didn't really know how it developed (possibly a fall or other injury in her cage) but took a biopsy of the fluid and did find some bacteria. She put her on an oral antibiotic for a week. The lumps have went down a lot since Monday and she said that was a good thing. We go back in a week. My poor baby remembered the vet from her last visit from her wellness exam and beak/nail trim and was super nervous as soon as we went in the room. I'm always amazed how smart she is <3

Hoping your baby responds to the treatment. That size and quickness of manifestation would have had me climbing the walls, and like 'Boats said - being a general pain in the bottom until I had the avian vet look at the parrot. Let us know how it turns out, please.

Good news! Hopefully the swelling will rapidly decrease and the tissue will heal. All Hail Antibiotics!!

Please keep us updated, hope the follow-up visit goes well!!

I've been following the thread hoping for a good outcome, sounds like things are going in the right direction. I wonder what happened? I've seen cats get swellings like that from being in fights....could the other parrot have beak-poked him? I wish you both good health and a quick recovery!

Hey everyone, sorry to have left you hanging. Our baby healed up rather quickly and her little face is back to its perfect beautiful self! Thanks for your concerns!
