Left Leg Cold and Suddenly Not Working!

Fudge! Just gave the kākāriki their meds, now Ria's left leg isn't working. She fell behind the cage while we were catching her for her antibiotics.

She's dragging her left leg, and she has it in a fist. The toes on her left foot are cold. We manipulated her leg, and it doesn't seem to be hurting and has full range of motion. Toes can also bend. She has poor motor control of said leg, foot, and toes. She's dragging it as she walks. She can unfurl toes and bend leg, but not well. While examining her, she stretched her leg out behind her at an unnatural angle. Behaviour is somewhat odd, as she did not behave nervously or become tense when Mom was petting her head (she is not tame). She began to lay her head against my chest, closing her eyes.

Put her back in cage, but her leg is still not functioning properly. Again, does not appear to be broken or dislocated. Concern over cool foot and toes. What do I do? It's midnight, and there are absolutely no avian vets open on the weekend, not even for emergencies. Will keep you updated.



What the heck? It's suddenly working properly again and has heated up!? She also started attacking me while I was holding her.

Go get her checked, it could be neurological and not physical and only a CAV can determine that one. Good luck.

From a timeline, there 'could be' a relationship between the loss of control of the left leg and the antibiotics you are providing!

So, how long from the time your provided the antibiotics and when you first notices the issue with the left leg?

If it is within two hours of providing the antibiotics, stop providing them until you speak with your CAV. NOTE: If this timeline exists, call your CAV's emergency number and leave a message. Be ready to be at your CAV first time Monday!

It could be a stroke...it could be a pulled tendon in the leg...hard to say without an exam. In the meantime, keep her comfortable.

Caring for a Sick/Recovering Bird at Home

Most unusual symptoms, but thankfully not a seemingly permanent issue. Definitely would see the vet ASAP!

the coldness and the fact she wasn't grumpy when you held her foot tells me it's not a pinched nerve as that hurts. My gut says stroke or the meds. More likely the latter due to the time frame

Yeah, I'm kind of inclined to agree with you on that. Normally she's fine with the meds, but other times they make her really nauseous and whatnot. A few weeks back when we had them on yet another 10-day course of meds, we had to skip giving them to her one night because she was just so sick from them.
