My 10 year old Alexandrine parakeet has liver failure. Currently she's taking lactulose+silymarin+SAMe, aloe vera juice, milk thistle/dandelion, and pedialyte. I heard good things about lily of the desert aloe herbal detox formula and I'm wondering how much of it I should give her. I give her medicines directly with a dropper or syringe. Looking for anyone who can help to save her life. Please help! Thank you very much.

Hi I have a RB2 with FLD.

Firstly have you consulted an Avian Veterinarian? This is not a quick fix disease with potions purchased off the shelf. Where in the world are you located btw?

There have been good write ups about it but I am not one of them unfortunately, neither good or bad in my case. You need to be very careful not double dosing as silymarin and Milk Thistle are the same thing.

Silibinin (INN), also known as silybin (both from Silybum, the generic name of the plant from which it is extracted), is the major active constituent of silymarin, a standardized extract of the milk thistle seeds, containing a mixture of flavonolignans consisting of silibinin, isosilibinin, silicristin, silidianin, and others. Silibinin itself is a mixture of two diastereomers, silybin A and silybin B, in approximately equimolar ratio.[1] The mixture exhibits a number of pharmacological effects, particularly in the liver, and there is some clinical evidence for the use of silibinin as a supportive element in alcoholic and child grade 'A' liver cirrhosis from Wiki

What is your bird's diet?

Welcome to the forums, sorry your introduction is due to a serious crisis.

There are several aspects of liver disease, ranging from an incipient illness to care of an advanced patient. Very important to have a skilled avian vet, though holistic treatment seems beneficial for some. The trick is to find a care specialist comfortable with managing both traditional and homeopathic therapies.

I recall that Birdman666 provide a Post that defined his good efforts with one of his Parrots. I believe that Post was part of 2017 activities.

Regardless, it is "Very important to have a skilled avian vet." This is not a medical problem to be guess.

The basis of Aloe Detox being supposedly effective is by being able to get the bird to drink enough of the undiluted liquid. There are usually infections that are only able to be treated by an CAV. If you are consulting a CAV then it should be with their approval that detox is administered as well as any prescribed medicines.

I asked my CAV about this product and if it was alright to administer, he said yes if I wanted to. When asked what he thought of the product he said that he had a salesman trying to convince him it was the latest panacea and was told that he himself took it. The CAV took one look at the rather unhealthy looking salesman with numerous ailments, smiled but declined.

I do not think it is bad, I have a bottle in the fridge, just not the cure all you hear of. To go after this instead of recognised treatment would be plain foolish and unfair to the little life you want to save IMO.
