Oh my little green wood-chipper [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]

Last night Carl spooked for some reason and had a thrash about his cage. He's injured his eye and possibly done some damage to the bones around his eye and beak. So emergency trip to the vet last night and back again this morning.

Last night they gave him a shot of pain killers and one of some mild anti-inflammatory to get him through the night and this morning they will be putting him under so they can do a dye test on his eye and feel around his face to make sure theres no breaks.

My poor little fella. Even though he hates me 9/10 days...he didnt want to leave my hand last night or this morning. Vet reckons he'll be okay, we just need to make sure his eye is ok.

Oh Carl, s'matter with you, looks like ye been in a bar fight. Sounds like your vet is on top of it though and you did right to get him in ASAP. Too bad you cant put a steak on his eye. Maybe from to night and a few days you take all but sleeping perch and food/water bowls out of his cage. Do you cover him up at night? If yes, maybe leave some space so he gets a little light, he may be nervous because he cant see as well out of his right eye. Good luck tomorrow and please let the board know how Carl fares!

His cage is bare bones at the moment just to be safe. A few perches and his food and water dishes.

Still waiting to hear from the vet.... [emoji852][emoji852][emoji852]

2 trips and $500+ later I've got my boy back! Doc said there's no breaks and his eye isnt damaged, just the muscles around it are swollen. Which in the grand scheme of things is fantastic!!!
Pain meds and anti-inflammatories for the next week and he should be good to go. She did mention to put a small heat lamp on him for a while just while he recovers, though. So happy to have my boy home.....and hes even fairly cuddly at the moment!

Gee vet bills can be scary :S Super glad the green machine is all good though! And obviously no injury would have been so much better...but nothing wrong with enjoying the cuddles while you can get them ;)

Every child wants it's mother when hurt, so you see he really loves you after all. Hope he recovers quickly but keeps the cuddles.

Yes those feathery dusters with pliers wrap themselves around our hearts. All that's needed is some band aids on standby.

Glad to hear he is doing better. We hope he has a speedy recovery and the affection continues.
You probably know, but just make sure he can remove himself from the heat lamp area in the event he feels too warm.

Thanks
Kelly and Karl

That is great news! Good way to start the day here on the Forum. Carl is still a young bird and they are clumsy. Did you figure out what spooked him so badly? Is he prone to nite-frights?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Poor Carl, looks mighty uncomfortable in the OP. Glad his prognosis is great and he feels better.

Does he have a history of night frights or sudden scares? Hopefully it was a transient issue and nothing more serious.

Poor sweetheart! That is why I added a "vet fund" to my latest budget (I totally redid my budgeting system this month), putting $75 a month away just for possible veterinary bills so that my emergency fund for MYSELF wouldn't be touched of my fids get hurt--I have awesome human health care, but vet bills are NUTS!!!

I am SO glad he's okay. He does look like he's gotten into a metaphorical fist fight! You should tell people he was in a bar brawl... with his perch. ;)

Awe thanks for all the love guys! He is eating more today, which is great. Hes still quiet, but I think that's because hes so sore. Poor thing. Ive got a small heat lamp that's not right on the cage, amd its towards the front corner, so he can regulate to different areas of the cage and cool down if he needs/wants, but he seems pretty content to stay under it.

He is sleeping a fair bit, but thats one of the ways we heal, so I cant see why it wouldnt be same for him. I'm just making sure he continues eating and drinking.

I still have no idea what spooked him, as it was during the day (I noticed his eye when I got home from work) so I've covered one side just so that for now, the only side he has to "worry about" is the front of his cage, which faces us as his cage is already in a corner.

His name is temporarily changed from "Carl" to "Carrrrggghl" (horrible attempt at pirate joke)

Carl's eye opens more daily, and hes back to being a chatterbox! I am keeping his cage fairly bare bones for another day or two, until Im confident he isnt hindered by it, and then he'll get some new toys :)

oof poor Carl! Glad to hear he's doing better.

Silver lining, maybe this will help him be more trusting of you and outward in showing any affection
