One Eclectus, Scarlett
Scarlett, my eclectus, is sneezing every minute or so, with breaks of a few hours sometimes. The feathers below her nostrils are wet. She has been doing this for about a week and a half.

There aren't any other animals in the house except for a cat, who finished moulting a few weeks ago.

Scarlett is in the process of moulting if that makes any difference. She goes outside for a few hours two or three times a week. Her diet is some of the following each day: apple, kiwi fruit, grapes, and passionfruit. She gets millet seed with Turbobooster and Fvite once or twice a week and since she started sneezing I've put Dufoplus, Ioford, and Quickgel into her water but it hasn't made any difference. She gets a shower two or three times a week.

Also, it looks like the bottom half of her beak is peeling. I know birds' beaks are growing all the time, but is it normal for it to look like it's peeling? Also the very top of her beak has a slight rippled pattern? Also near the tip of the beak it looks like a bit of the outer layer got scraped off?

Apart from the above, she is her normal ratbag self. The feathers that are growing in are about 100 times brighter red than her current feathers.

I hope I don't need to take her to the vet, her vet is about 4-5 hours drive away and charges a small fortune :-(

Ag no that is horrible. :( The discharge below her nose sounds like a problem. Have you searched the web about it yet? I noticed earlier this morning the add on the forum page: Ask a Bird Vet online Now Bird.JustAnswer.com/Symptoms. It is in blue on my screen. Have anyone tried it, can you try it?

Yeah, the things I have read say that if it is thick or coloured, or if the clear discharge is accompanied by the bird being fluffed up and sleepy, that there is an infection or cancer or psiticosis (can't spell it!). But she is her normal self.

Also she got tested when I first got her for all the things you can test birds for, and she didn't have any of them. She hasn't been in contact with any other birds since and she hasn't ever walked on the ground (has been in some tree branches though).

Also if it means anything, she has picked a small hole in her chest (which is filling up now) and has picked at the ends and sides of her tail feathers and the sides of some of her flight feathers.

When Sterretjie's flight feathers came out she picked at them so badly that it even started bleeding. Maybe Scarlet is just doing it because she is busy molting?

Aussieben has an electus, he is studying that is why is not online much.

I hope somebody else here knows the symptoms and can help you, otherwise a vet trip will be your only option.

I just had Puffin at the vet this week for his annual checkup and we have a new avian vet who did a blood test for clamydia and she asked me if Puffin sneezed a lot and if he ever had any discharge from his nostrils. I said yes he does sneeze a bit but no discharge and she told me one of the diseases she was checking for can sit dormant so even if the test is negative it is not a given that he doesn't have it. Considering that your bird also has the discharge, I would be taking him straight to the vet.

The vet explained to me how susceptable birds are to dust as they don't have any in the wild and our homes are full of it and sometimes dust can really aggravate their sensitive sinus so to try and minimize it if possible. She also said perfume can cause them to sneeze and I have noticed Puffin sneezes more when I have a certain scent on so I stopped wearing it.

I hope this helps .

i have got a female eclectus parrot and we went through exactly what you are going through at the moment including the beak. she had a sinus infection we nearly lost her from giving her to many anti-biotics. Every now and then she has a flare up. any little stress will make her sneeze, and we have a small vacuum cleaner and have to make sure we get every bit of dust out of her cage. egg yolk is great and sunshine.
make sure theres no little bits of dried food on her perch that she might inhale.and i have also noticed before we get rain she sneezes a lot. and when she is molting or getting new feathers or not enough sleep, but any little stress and she will start sneezing and gets wet nostrils, make sure you get your bird tested for clamydia because that can make humans very sick as well as birds, but if she is moulting maybe try a moulting aid it has all the vitamins to reduce the stress hope this helps i know what you are going through!!
