Sick Macaw...any suggestions

Hello, I have a 19 yr old Greenwinged Macaw, Brixley. He has never had any health problems until two weeks ago. He was lethargic and vomiting; vet did gram stain; advised he had a bacterial infection. Took 4 days of Baytril (after first day seemed to back to his old self). After the 4th day he became extremely sleepy. He now continues to regurgitate his food (not for a good reason), he is unable to keep his head tucked backwards as it falls over. He tried to sleep with his head resting forward. He stopped eating, we are force feeding. Last couple of days he picks at a bit of food, but he has lost some weight. Vets have done blood work and are unable to find anything....they have no answers. We are desperate; started him on a macrodiet yesterday with all raw foods.

Any ideas?

Thanks

wow, that's no good! My only suggestion is to try to get a second opinion from another vet, make sure it's an avian spe******t! The bird is obviously weak and in a bad state, so this is something you need to do quickly... Is there any chance he ingested any foreign objects or metal? Has he had an x-ray to check for this?

good luck, and I hope he pulls through...

Did they do an x-ray? This was the only thing that saved my girls life.

While I was in and out at the vet, almost every day, there was a woman who's parrot had the same symptoms as yours - it turned out to be led poisoning.:(

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately my beloved greenwing passed away on Wednesday.....I'm devastated. The necropsy indicated that he had PDD. I knew a bit about this disease, but never really knew what I now know. Very scary as I have several other parrots and this virus is supposed to be super contagious. Always worried him outliving me and I that he would think that I had abandoned him :(

Oh my heavens. I am so very very sorry to hear about your loss. Our fids are such fragile little ones and it is so scary to know that they can be taken from us so quickly. My CAG is only 4 1/2 months old and I WORRY like crazy over him. I worry about him eating things he isn't supposed to, contracting a bacterial infection/disease, developing issues with his organs and so on and so forth, all for this very reason. Because I see folks who have suffered such great loss with their beloved babies.
I'm so very sorry, you and your family will be in my prayers.:(
