Pain relief and/or bandages?

Hi everybody!

So, my cockatiel has hurt her foot again. Think of when you pull dead skin from your finger and accidentally go too deep and get to tender red skin. It's like that. My tiel is licking at it, and holding the foot up when she rests, but otherwise is using it normally.

Can I make her foot feel better while it heals? Or can I bandage it for her so she doesn't feel the need to pick at it? Last time this happened she was absolutely fine and it healed on it's own, but if I can do something I would like to. I've checked the area and once again the only thing I think could cause this is the tops of the doors, which is a favorite landing spot of hers. I'm going to have to sand them.

Also, for anyone who's seen my previous posts about Iggy's health- good news! She went to the vet recently and received a general checkup/blood tests/gram stain and she's very healthy. Everything was normal and good!

I'm unsure as to if I can just call and ask a question. At the moment I can't afford to take her in for another visit for something small.

I'm pretty sure it's my house's doors. They're new, (about 2 years old) and the tops of them are rather rough because it's more work for the company to sand them when its something that won't normally be seen. I'm probably going to have to sand them myself soon.

I've never known a vet or any doc whose office won't take a call. I hope you can fix the situation because I have heard that feet are critical for birds. They only have two and if one goes bad the other gets pretty worn out. If two get hurt then it would be a bad thing.

First of all, if you cannot simply call-up your CAV to ask her a question about treatment, health, diet, etc., then you need a new CAV. Period. Usually I'll call my CAV or email him, and if I call I'll have to leave a message, and he calls me back within the hour or by the end of his work day, or he'll email by the end of his work day. If you don't feel comfortable asking your CAV about this or anything else, you need to start looking for a new one...You should not have to take your bird in for a visit to simply ask them a question about what topical pain-reliever to put on his foot. And if you leave a message and they don't ever call you back, same thing...If you have to pay them money for something like this, then they're not the type of vet you want to have...

To answer your question, my CAV recommended a lidocaine cream for my Senegal when he literally chewed-off one of his toes (long story involving a dangerous cage and me not being home, it was horrible)...i rushed him in immediately, obviously, and he made a skin-flap and covered the exposed bone/end of the toe, bandaged it, gave an antibiotic injection, and then recommended a topical lidocaine cream that I bought at Walmart. I would just dab a tiny bit on the end of his toe, rub it in gently, and he left it alone for hours...
