So if you saw my other vet thread Lincoln has some odd vitamin and nutrients levels and we are working on that but I never got the full results because the voicemail had cut off and I couldn't get in contact with the vet and was running around a lot bc of life stuff. I adjusted his diet and such based off what I did know and he's been doing okay but I am at the vet with him again for a follow up (they're in the back checking to see how his bacterial infection is doing, Lincoln is with me though) and they went over everything with me again. He's low in phosphor AND calcium. He's also dehydrated despite his very wet chop + constant access to water + regular showers. He's high in cholesterol and something else I can exactly remember right now but they're writing it down on his sheet for me to take home.

Now here's the problem; I showed them the diet he's on currently and they approved it and said I covered all be basis except calcium which I will need to add in, yet he's still low on lots of stuff. They're worried he's just not absorbing the nutrients and suggest supplements but I know eclectus don't normally do well with supplements and I'm a little confused on what to do.

They've given me some suggestions on getting him hydrated and getting his skin less dry (can't remember but something do with bathing oils, again will be written on the sheet so I'll update when they come back) but im also hesitant about that but I'll see what you guys think when I get everything back.

So:
- Bacterial infection
- Dry skin
- Elevated white cell count due to either molt or infection or both
- Dehydrated
- Lacks calcium
- Lacks phosphor
- High in cholestoral

I feel like I'm in over my head and have my work cut out for me for awhile. I'll do anything for this bird.

they just came back in and said his infection is doing a lot better and white cell count is down which is really good.

edit: they said a vitamin E oil diluted in a warm water spray

My husband and I were just chatting about how an Eclectus can have such special needs. We commend you on working so hard to meet Lincoln's requirements.

The Rival (aka Kirby) wants to know how Linciln got his name.

I also have Oliver an eclectus. Oliver was doing some plucking and I didn't notice it right away on his back so we went to the vet last week and he also has a elevated white blood count and is low on calcium( but has improved since last visit)
She believes he has also has an infection. We came home with antibiotic for 2 weeks and calcium powder for his food. and another appt. in 2 weeks
after 24 hours he is back to his normal sassy self.
hang in there they are so worth it and your doing a great thing for him Glad he has you

I’m sorry.
I’m glad you know what you are dealing with, so now you can address it and hopefully turn things around. I’ll be pulling for you

Greys can become Ca deficient easily, so in addition to his pellets I offer him broccoli probably 4 times a week & dark green leafy veggies everyday. I’m so glad he likes them. :smile049:

I feel the love for Lincoln by the worry in your words. If you are certain these vets are truly Avian Certified or even higher qualification just go with their treatments. Good that they wrote it all down for you - I would need a tape recorder.

they are CAV and so far the seem rather knowledgeable about eclectus too. I'm just hesitant bc Lincoln tends to be very sensitive and prone to toe taps

the other thing he was low in protein btw. I just cooked him up some scrambled eggs with some chopped up spinach and a tiny touch if cheese and milk for some calcium. Set aside the egg shells to dry so I can grind them up and sprinkle it in his chop.

If you have time I would sure like the particulars on the vitamin E and water solution. Anakin has a really dry beak and feet.

They said something about a vial of the oil at Wal-Mart, I haven't had the chance to look yet. But as far as I'm aware it's just straight vitamin e oil but ill let you know when I know more

I did a bit of looking online and I found a couple options.

This one is a mix of soybean oil, coconut oil, and Vitamin E. I'm hesitant about the soybean oil as I've been told soybeans contain estrogen which can cause hormonal problems. If heard that coconut oil is good for human skin but not sure about birds.

This one is Vitamin E and safflower oil. I'm not sure on the benefits of potential dangers of safflower though. Roughly same price as the first one.

This one is largely the most expensive but it's just vitamin E

well I'm not looking for vitamins in the form of consumables. Vet suggested a straight up oil (no capsules etc) and just mix it with water during bath time
I'll check it out though

Thanks for the information.
Did the vet happen to tell you the ratio of oil to water?

I don't know about the soy bean oil or safflower oil, but Vitamin E oil is in many, many lotions, ointments, creams, etc. for both people and animals for their skin, so I would imagine that it will help his skin quite a bit.

For vitamins/supplements/oils/natural soaps/cleansers and anything else of the kind, try www.luckyvitamin.com They have everything and are by-far the cheapest place I've seen for any of this kind of stuff, cheaper than Walmart, and they have such a huge selection, quick shipping, etc. I've been ordering from them for years. Not only cheap, but they have things that you can't find anywhere else. Also have every essential oil in existence...

It does sound like his body is having issues absorbing nutrition, but you also have to take the infection into account. If the infection is bad enough that his WBC's are elevated that much, then this can certainly effect his metabolism...And if they don't exactly know where the infection is located, it would make sense that it may be somewhere in his GI Tract, as that is obviously where vitamins, minerals, calories, fat, carbs, protein, etc. is all absorbed into the body, especially throughout the intestinal tract. So the nutritional-deficiency issues may very-well start to improve after the infection is cleared-up.
