Hi everyone,
I noticed about a week ago that one of my aviary birds, Michelle, had an enlarged/swollen chest. Initially I thought that she had perhaps eaten a lot (for example, Pearl is a glutton and after a big meal she often looks really full, so I assumed that at first with this budgie). However, this swelling didn't go down over the next day, so I immediately made an appointment and took her to the vet.
The vet felt her crop, and said that there is a small mass inside, but the only way to know is to operate and take a sample/remove it. My only thoughts are this:
- Crop impaction from something in the aviary (I don't know what, I can't think of anything in particular that would cause it)
- A fatty tumour, like a lipoma
- A malignant tumour
What I am most concerned about is the surgery. When Sunshine, who had a malignant sarcoma (we didn't know this until the sample came back) went in for surgery, she didn't make it. I know that she was very sick and the tumour had likely spread, I still worry that poor Michelle will not make it through surgery either. She is healthy otherwise, eating normally (for now, I imagine that the mass is affecting her ability to eat), and she is still able to fly (however, her body is a lot heavier than normal).
She went in this morning. I just don't know how likely it is for any budgie to survive surgery - I know it does happen, but such a tiny little bird is so at risk.
I've had enough losses for one year. My dog Layla passed away, and two budgies, Sunshine and Emerald, also did. I just don't know how I will handle this if Michelle doesn't make it. If it's crop impaction, I know I will blame myself - maybe if it is the vet will be able to tell me what it is from, like maybe a colour or a texture, and I'll be able to determine what kind of toy/item caused it in the aviary. Then again, budgies are so prone to tumours, so it may be something entirely out of my control.
