Yeah, Jim, I've used those and other similar. Rb doesn't seem too interested until I crunch 'em up. Then he just plays with them as far as I can tell.

Yep, I've used them with my Budgies and Cockatiels before, used to hang them up in all of my breeder's cages...They've been around for a long, long time, long before all the "fancy" Mineral Blocks shaped like strawberries and pineapples and big flowers, lol...

I only give Kiwi Manu mineral blocks, though I'm unsure if they'd be appropriate for old world parrots as they are made of the same stuff as the South American clay licks parrots native to the amazon basin eat in nature. The flavorful/colorful variety have artificial flavors and colors in them. You may consider giving BB cuttlebones instead, as those are natural.

About 3 years ago I acquired an enormous amount of Mineral Blocks from a friend's mother. She had a Cockatiel that passed-away at the age of 17, she was heart-broken as she'd had him his entire life, and she just wanted to get everything that had to do with him or birds out of her house. So my friend just grabbed everything she had, loaded it into her pick-up truck, and then drove to my house...My phone rang and I heard "Open your garage door up, I've got the motherload of parrot stuff inside my truck and in the bed of my truck"...So I opened up the garage and saw a huge cage and a large, metal play-stand thing (both of which I dontated to the Rescue), and then there were probably 15-20 massive, plain white, unopen bags of Higgins Cockatiel seed-mix, 25 pounds a piece. i kept one of them just as a "back-up" or "emergency" bag of seed (for the next hurricane, earthquake, mudslide,, etc. that happens in Pennsylvania, lol), the rest went to the Rescue...

But there was this large box that was filled with dozens of these plain white Mineral Blocks. They are square in shape and have the wires to attach them to the cage bars coming out of the middle of each block...I took one of them to my CAV at our next appointment just to see what he thought, and he said they are basic Mineral Blocks with no added colors, flavors, etc., just blocks of Calcium Carbonate that gives the birds Calcium and Phosphorous, and lets them keep their beaks trimmed...He said they are probably the best kind of Mineral Blocks you can give your birds because there isn't anything added to them at all, they are just pure Calcium Carbonate Mineral Blocks...So I kept them...

I won't have to buy a new Mineral Block until about the year 2035 or so...

Those and cuttlebones just get ignored mostly. I had one each for M&M early on, but beyond some occasional nibbles they never found them interesting enough (there was actually a treat inside one block, but Moch didn't bother to delve that far into it).

Sure, be nice to Jim but how come when I posted a few years ago about mineral blocks everyone jumped on me about giving my bird something that she didn't need...or at least that I didn't know if she needed or not.
It's not fair I tell ya ;)

Hhaha...seemed like a fairly friendly thread to me! For future forum readers, EllenD's post here describes that even when a fid is really tearing into their block, ("Too much of a good thing? Paris eats her mineral block for hours..."), it's probably fine. And when she can say that about anything with only a handful (vs the usual dozen) caveats...it's probably fine.;)

PS: btw this why I compulsively add <tags> to each thread...helping with future reference.

Sorry Bill, it happens, fads come and go...
And if they sell those blocks everywhere (at least it happens to me) you start to doubt yourself. I got mine in a goodie-bag at the parrot-day, and being dutch (aka free stuff is heaven!)...waste not and give it a try.

Japie was delighted: something new he could get p00p on

I'll just hog this thread for a second :p

what do you people think about this one:

https://www.northernparrots.com/images/products/medium/57551_1.jpg
Analysis
Calcium 319g/kg
Phosphorus 0.32g/kg
Sodium 5.68g/kg
Crude Ash 91.66%

(link: https://www.northernparrots.com/loro-parque-mineral-block-for-parrots-400g-prod57551/ )

or do you use those from normal pet stores for budgies or similar (I somoehow don't like those coloured strawberry shaped things, but am unsure)... the one I posted is coarser, not smooth and pretty big though...
