I need help with my African Grey, she can't close her beak. Her tongue also appears to be injured. She is not eating. there is also a small portion of her skin underneath her lower beak that is loose and hanging. She never had that before. today, I had to hold her down and remove food from the bottom of her lower beak. Has anyone experienced this? What is wrong with my bird? Thanks!

I have never experienced anything like this before but I am wondering if she cut in on a sharp piece of a toy. Is it bleeding? I would take her to the vet right away.

Seek veterinarian attention immediately.
Bleeding from the tongue can be serious. To help prevent injury, check the cage regularly for loose wire, broken toys, or other sharp objects, and watch your bird carefully when he is out of her cage. Because his tongue contains many blood vessels it may bleed profusely if injured.
Never apply styptic to his tongue.

Hello, I have now identical problem. What happened. My bird eats, and drinks without difficulty. Of course i'm going to bring him to a vet, but it is not fast in my country. There is no tension on the bulging thing. Bird breaths fine and is active.

I live in Finland, in Europe. I have 6 months old African grey and 8 years old orange winged amazon.

Normally our parrots get along pretty well. Unfortunately yesterday our african grey got between food cup and an hungry amazon with spring fever. Our amazon bit the african grey somewhere in mouth. After that there was some blood staining in African greys mouth. I thought I saw laceration on African greys tongue.
Today our african grey has 0,75 inch bulging skin leason below beak. When I looked to his mouth, I saw very clearly that the tongue is not connected to lower beak in front. Theres wide and narrow hole separating tongue from beak, maybe 0,2-3 inch/ 6 mm. When I push the bulging injury it seems that some fluid comes from african greys mouth.
Do parrots have salivary glands. If so, is the outlet seeable. I have photos of the bulging injury here:

Ouch.. looks really bad! I hope the vet is able to see you soon, the poor guy :(. Do you house your Amazon and your Grey in the same cage?

no, but when they are free they were often on same cage. Wont happen again though. Good news. The enlarged pouch has clearly got smaller during night. Atleast there is no more bleeding/collection of fluid there

I'm having the same problem with my eclectus parrot. I took her to the vet yesterday and they gave me some antibiotics and pain meds. How's your African grey doing? How long did this last? I'm extremely nervous right now.

Well,

It took 1 night for the fluid to build up
2 night to vanish
- Bird ate all the time normally.

A week ago, the was some build up once again, a lot less this time.

Wheight has been around 380gr all the time.

Bird is fine. I'm not entirely certain of the diagnosis. It might be also infection and have nothing to do with the fight. Or anatomic abnormality that can infect. Atleast human have this remnant from the time we were fish. Some people have it (a cyst). It can infect. When it infects it comes visible and builds up fluid. It moves when you swallow and its more below in neck not right below beak.

On the other hand there should then be pressure if it were infection. It should be hot and tender. My birds bulging was not. Then again there might be some differences between human and parrot. I'm studing unfortunately human medicine.
