I want to try growing sprouts for my boys but can't seem to find what are the best seeds to start with and or where to buy them from. Where do those of us in the USA shop to buy the sprouting seeds and supplies? Is there a better growing medium I should look for? Not sure if commercial potting soil is a safe choice either.

So many soils are now sold with plant food already in them. Is that safe for our fids?:smile027:

i have sprouted with just a shallow glass bowl, water, seed/beans, and a colander....
if you have a mason jar you could put small holes in the lid and use that as a sprouting jar, but you dont necessarily have to have a sprouting jar

My sprouting jar is a mason jar with a round piece of screen material and the round lid that fits on the jar (open) top.

Looks a little like this:

I bought the mason jars today. Can't seem to find any small pieces of screen but it is winter here.. Can I use something like cheese cloth or will that mold easily?

Cheesecloth should work just fine. We have a couple o EZ Sprouters that we go from our breeder. We get our sprouting seeds from a local "health food" grocery store called Sprouts. They have a lot of bulk seeds and grains that are organic. We also order raw pumpkin seeds (our birdies' favorite) from nutsonline.com.

Happy sprouting. Do not be surprised if your bird turns them down for a while. It takes a long time for a bird to eat somethng new as you know. Rosie was eating away at them and then I stopped sprouting for a while and now she will not eat them. Grrrrrrrrr.

Echo will probable turn his beak at them he is a picky boy. Tobi on the other hand is an eating machine and will eat absolutely anything I give him which is why I call him Tobi the tank..
