Today all the birds were on the tree, getting along as usual. The girls (Paris and North) will go near the boys (Ollie and Finley) here and there and the boys will warning nip at them. But they usually stay in their spots and hang out. Ofc I supervise them together on the tree the whole time they're there. Now and the Ollie will decide he wants to seek out one of the girls to bite them but he hasn't done it in a while and he usually just does a glancing blow off their beaks and doesn't contact their skin. Well today North fell off the tree and we have a latter for them to climb back up themselves and while North was going up the latter Ollie decided this was a prime opportunity to get a bite in and by the time he went for it and I saw what he was going to do it was too late. He nailed poor North in the foot. I didn't know that though so I took Ollie to his cage and scolded him telling him "no bite" and gave him a time out. When I got back to the tree there was blood everywhere... EVERYWHERE. I then proceeded to look for the sorce of the blood and I found it and stuffed her foot in the quick-stop jar and she stopped bleeding for the most part . Upon further inspection her toe didn't look right..it was like slightly to the side and I couldn't tell if it was just the cut or if it was slightly broken.
I decided to go to the Emergency vet that's like 10 mins away. They have a CAV on staff there 24 hours a day. After about an hour wait they told me that her toe had been crushed and needs to be amputated and I need to leave her there and she'll have to go under anesthesia for the operation.
Poor North...I feel bad for her. I guess this can happen when multiple birds are out together. My husband and I will have to figure something out so this doesn't happen again or to Paris. My poor baby!
Please keep her in your thoughts as she goes through surgery in the next couple of hours.

Oh no!!! Poor North!! :(((

Maybe the boys should be kept separated from the girls or have two different trees?

Hoping she heals fast. Poor baby!!

She's in surgery right now. I feel bad because she's so young and totally didn't deserve this. Do you think missing a toe will affect her much? Other than being embarrassed to wear sandals in the summer....

I wouldn't worry too much about it Desi..I remember YEARS ago my Grandparents budgie was missing a toe on EACH foot! ( Back then I was just a kid, then after getting my birds and reading up on stuff I came to the conclusion that poor "Pretty Boy" had untreated mites and the poor budgie chewed his own toes off!) Anyway, the budgie got around just fine.

North is young and she'll learn to adapt. Its a shame, sorry to hear of this. Like mentioned...maybe you should keep the guys and gals separated. I had to do that with Amy and Smokey coz Smokey just lived to torment poor Amy.

Thank you everyone for keeping us in your thoughts.
North has made it through surgery and is home doing well. She's asleep now and weirdly didn't seem too upset to be missing half a toe. I bet she's happier because it doesn't hurt that much now.

Yeah we're going to keep the girls and boys separated from now on, on the tree and otherwise.

For what it's worth Ollie didn't make one peep the rest of the day...and he's a sun conure so yeah I'm guessing he is remorseful.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Very sorry to know North had amputation surgery, glad she is now recovery.

I have 3 very senior birds with significant arthritis in one or more digits. They adapt very well, time is definitely on North's side.

I'm happy to report that her lack of toe is not in any way impeding her ability to walk around, climb or eat. Honestly, by seeing her (unless you look at her toes ofc) you never in a million years think she had her toe bitten off yesterday. I still feel bad about it but she doesn't seem to mind that much...my only thought is that it wasn't a terribly useful toe? Well anyways the important thing here is that she seems happy enough except when I give her the antibiotics she was precribed. I have Medicam too but unless I see she's having an issue I'm going to hold off on that as I know it can cause problems. I asked the vet if it was okay and she said that's fine. This ER CAV is top notch though...like seriously they did an amazing job.

I’m just reading this for the first time, I’m so sorry to hear this happened. I hope North continues to heal quickly and completely. I’ve met several parrots that have lost one or more toes, they tend to do exceptionally well. Your quick reaction in an emergency probably saved North from far more pain and suffering, I’m glad you have a good CAV in your area.

ouch, poor North!

Hopefully Ollie has learnt his lesson on biting here. Good shout keeping them separated for now, seems like Ollie is possibly forgetting he's a lot bigger than the others

Sorry to hear about North's accident, the poor baby. It definitely shouldn't affect her though, my DYH is missing both his front toes on one foot and you'd never know just by watching him climb around and play.
