Safe Way to Shine a Floor?

How can I make wood floors shiny?

I have removed three 20-year old rugs, and replaced only one. I now have two rooms with bare wood floors, one of which is in beautiful condition. The other... well, half of it could be nice - if it was shiny.

Is there a parrot-safe way to shine a wood floor?
