Two of my birdies, namely Fang and HRH Lilly Pilly, went to the vet for their annual wellness check a few weeks back, Val is due for his early next year. The vets have picked up on ā€œchangesā€ in Fang and Valā€™s feet due to perching a lot on hard surfaces and I have taken many steps to try and remedy this but they continue to insist on deliberately seeking out the few remaining hard surfaces to perch on! To date I have wrapped their perches in equine vet tape and re-wrapped them in sisal twine so theyā€™re nice and spongy, and Iā€™ve draped those cargo net thingies over the domed tops of their cages to provide relief from the hard cage surfaces. We also have one of those wooden room divider/privacy screen jobs near our front door that they like to sit on which Iā€™ve recently cable-tied some braided seagrass onto. Val will sit there very tentatively but Fang thinks itā€™s now radioactive and wonā€™t go near it. In fact Fang seems to actively seek out spots like the hard top of his cage door or the rim of a ceramic feed dish to sit on, almost totally ignoring all of the efforts Iā€™ve made to improve his comfort!

Difficult? Ungrateful?? You betcha!!

Oh yes Aunty Laurasea, heā€™s got a variety of widths and flat surfaces to sit on, he just likes to drive me crazy!

Oh don't I know it noodles. Fang spent most of this morning sitting on the edge of his ceramic food dish, making me get up from my comfy couch and shoo him off! I must say though he is slowly following Val's sterling example and has made a few trips up to the wooden privacy screen thingy - he's still not convinced but i think he'll get there!

Whilst I am "between jobs" at the moment, I've decided to busy myself doing all those odd jobs around the house that never seem to get done. Today's project was cleaning out the pantry and chucking all those bottles and jars that invariably get pushed up the back and have long since passed their expiry date (and there were some doozies in there too!) Whereupon I came across this little beauty, a blast from the past from one of my trips to Thailand. It is allegedly "whiskey" but the name is where any similarity ends. I bought it about 10 years ago while on a boat tour along the canals that branch off from the Chao Phraya River for probably about $4, originally just for the novelty value but as you can see there's not much left! If memory serves (and I don't dare to open the bottle anymore!) it had a heady nose redolent of aviation fuel and paint thinner. It is completely and utterly lethal. Locals and tourists alike in Bangkok like to get completely legless on it mixed with Fanta and throw themselves into the river (neither is recommended!) I'm keeping what's left for sentimental reason because I love Thailand to bits but I may never get back there :17:

"Oh don't give me none more of that Ol' Thai Whiskey,
No, don't you give me none more of that Ol' Thai Whiskey,
For my head will fly, my tongue will lie, my eyes will fry and I may die,
Won't you pour me one more of that sinful Ol' Thai Whiskey!"
(with apologies to Douglas Adams :) )

Make it as a reward for the birds to perch on the non- hard surfaced areas you want them to perch on like pegging up fruits and other bits and pieces for them.
Collect natural perches from various eucalyptus trees and melaleuca varieties (paperbark), like iron barks and stringy bards as birds love to shred the bark of the branches
Thanks

Thanx Noah - I think Fang will be shredding the seagrass soon enough. Good thing I bought extra!

Fang is always a lot quicker on the uptake than I give him credit for. It took him about 2 days to work out that the seagrass I've attached to his favourite perching spot is not in fact radioactive :) Here he is with Val enjoying the view (and the cooling breeze) by the front door.

Maybe I should give him Thai whiskey to drink more often!
