Kiwi The Lovebird
Hey everyone. I recently moved to South Carolina with my Lovebird Kiwi. Everything has been great except I think the cold weather has gotten to her. The past couple of days Ive noticed her sneezing woth wet nares, and making a nasally sound after sneezing. She also seems to be not as active. Ive also noticed the left side of her beak is losing its "orangeness" and becoming "see through"? Her beak also looks dry like shes been scratching it or rubbing.

Im at a loss because I am to leave town this Monday and will have to have someone watch her. I called an exotic/avian vet (closest one to me is an hour away) and they would keep her for $18 a day...I mentioned I was concerned about her, but im really worried now! D':

She needs the care of a Certified Avian Vet as discharges from the nares indicates a nasal infection. Please have her seen immediately by a CAV, before you leave. For all birds, they hide illness carefully and by the time they show visible symptoms, the illness has progress to a critical point.

Hope she gets better

The stress of moving can allow hidden diseases to spring forth. The most common is psittacosis. As many birds have this without being sick, then a stressor allows the disease to show symptoms.
Also it's important that your bird eat veggie with vitamin A or a pellet. Vitamin A plays a big role in health and especially respiratory health.

With active symptoms you definitely need to get avain vet care, and I agree leave her with them while gone.
Just so sorry you guys are dealing with this. I hope she gets better quick!!! Keep us updated!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Birds notoriously hide symptoms, so when significantly on display they have potentially life threatening problems. Hopefully Kiwi can be diagnosed and treated as necessary.

Yup--get her to a CAV even if you have to drive a few hours. An exotics vet is not who you want in this case--especially because they will not be able to treat her if things get worse --they could try, but you need a specialist

Guys I really dont know what to do. I cant afford to goto a specialist, since moving up here has made things very very tight for me. I want to cry because I cant stand to watch her suffer or get worse. I really dont know what to do.

I'm so sorry for your difficulties, unfortunately the other replies are exactly right. Your fid needs a vet or will not last long . :(

Provide warmth, warmth us critical for sick bird. Maybe get hand feeding formula. Contact all family and friends ask for donations for vet visit. Return any Christmas presents for the cash and explain to people it's going to save your bird. Sometimes employers will give an advance if asked, I've asked and gotten and advance from a new job before. Take out a new line of credit if you have to. Call the power company, water company ask for an extension on bills, sometimes car insurance or car payment people are also willing to skip a month if asked nicely call churches and see if they have food bank, so you can save the money in food.... Sell something on craigslist, Good luck,!!!

Many vets now offer a payment plan to enable you to split your bills into smaller amounts payable over time. I hope you’re able to find a solution.

If you have a credit card--do that. Or, donate plasma-- that'll get you about 100 bucks in a day.

The pressure of moving can enable shrouded illnesses to spring forward. The most well-known is psittacosis. The same number of winged animals have this without being wiped out, at that point a stressor enables the malady to show side effects. Likewise it's significant that your feathered creature eat veggie with nutrient An or a pellet. Nutrient An assumes a major job in wellbeing and particularly respiratory health.
