I have been slowly (emphasis on slowly) transitioning my picky picky Ozzy from zupreem fruit to harrisons high potency mixed with roudybush. He still goes through phases where he will only eat one color of food (which is why I havent completely switched him over yet), lately its been purple and red. Today his droppings were very red. Ive come to expect some redness from the dye in the foods but this is brighter than normal red. We went to the vet yesterday and everything looked normal (waiting for blood results) so i dont want to over worry. I know when humans have blood in their stool (sorry if this is TMI) it is dark brown/black, would it be the same for birds?

Thank you

I reckon these question will probably best be answered by a vet.

I used to give my birds zupreem and Nicky would only eat the purple and red ones. (He is such a picky eater it's not even funny!) His droppings would then be purple or red. If you think that Ozzy's droppings are a brighter red than normal it is good that you took the extra precaution. Hopefully the color is just from the food. I don't know about birds but if there is bright red blood in a human's stool then it means that the source of the bleeding is towards the end of the digestive tract like the colon for example. Whereas if the stool is a dark red or black then it means that the source of the bleeding came form earlier on in the tract like in the small intestine. This is because the blood has had time to dry up before leaving the body. I am sure Ozzy is fine though. Did you bring a sample of his droppings to the vet?

Thank you for the responses. His droppings were back to normal the next morning so I have a feeling it was just the dye in the food. Luckily he is finally eating Harrisons so I am going to take zupreem away entirely soon. He always poops at the vet so they took a sample there and I got the results today and they said everything looks good and his kidney functions are improved since october so I feel better about his health!
