Double header: Rice, and UVA/UVB light

1) I haven’t given young Archie any cooked rice yet (9 months YNP), but I’m heading out soon to bring Chinese food home for his servants, the rest of my family.

I’m assuming processed white rice isn’t the most nutritious thing for him (am I right?), and I don’t plan on giving this to him very often at all...if he even likes it. But I gotta assume they use salt at the restaurant in this, so is this an issue and I shouldn’t give it to him from there, only made from home?

Whatever THIS answer is, does anyone mix anything into the rice after it’s cooked to notch up its attraction for him?

2) Just ordered a ZooMed lamp and a few extra bulbs. Any advice, or links, on the best way to position/set it up? I’ve read some conflicting things on its efficacy...I understand the possibilities that maybe bouncing the light off the wall is a better way to go...and I have no problem getting a second lamp to offset the loss from reflecting/bouncing the light.

You see, Archie is perfect, and I’m not, so I don’t want to screw him up!

No rice from take out!
Rice can quickly grow nasties, and it is common practice to make up a bunch ahead and have it out on the counter at restaurants. While we don't get sick as often from this , birds are more sensitive.

Only give rice you make, and only the day you make it. A few hours in the fridge and it's growing stuff.

Very likely because for Avians they are worthless??? Yaaa, that's it.

I noticed Ira writes it instead of YNA. (Probably YNP is from "yellow naped parrot" name verson)

Can it hurt, as long as I’m not blinding him with it?

As it is, although I live in Sunny Florida, my living room ISN’T and has very weak, indirect lighting, on a dimmer no less.

I keep the lighting subdued because when you look like me, strong lighting isn’t your friend.

Lol nope! Wrong spectrum for plant growth. Maybe as a supplement but not as the main light.

I’m still not convinced this light could possibly hurt Archie if not placed real close to him, especially if I bounce it off the back wall.

I understand that passions and beliefs run deep here, but you gotta have the science to back it up.

It’s still just a bulb, which I do believe, almost everyone here uses almost every day.

What science don’t you believe, the abundance of scientific literature on the effects of ultraviolet light in living organisms, or the vets who have treated birds every year for misuse of UV lights?

The dangers in avian applications are well known and not really up for debate. This is real, cancer causing UV light you’re messing with.

Well, this was a total waste of money.

The bulb isn’t even strong enough to bounce off the wall and at least give him some ambient light.

Does this mean I have to buy a tortoise or lizard now?
