Hi all,
Today when I uncovered little bird I noticed she had regurgitated and some was crusted to her beak. I thought it odd but hoped it was a once and done situation. I made her scrambled eggs (she usually has some scrambled eggs or oatmeal with her breakfast). She regurgitated them everywhere. She drank water and it happened again and again. It was slimy and clear. Her droppings became watery with no feces.
My vet got her in at 1pm today as an emergency. We are waiting on blood work results. Her fecal was clean. Her crop swab showed a few bits of yeast but doc said it shouldn't have made her so sick. They found hardly any and nothing in her stool. She had an injection of reglan and is in a hospital cage and is in good spirits. She has not regurgitated since the medicine. Doc is waiting on fluids until blood work results come back (hopefully tonight). Doc said she is bright eyed and alert which is a good sign.
The only thing new was that yesterday we put wood that we had bought and cut from a lumber store. It was supposed to be untreated. It looks untreated. The workers at the store said it was untreated. The sticker says select pine made in new zealand. However, the doctor is afraid the wood was treated, perhaps put in the wrong section or something, and little bird is suffering the consequences.
I'm just an absolute mess about the whole thing. Anyone else have any ideas what could cause such a sudden and violent onset of regurgitation and watery stools? I'm not convinced it's the wood, but I am definitely throwing it all out just in case.

Oh what a terrible worry for you, I’m so sorry you’re going through this! But at least you were able to get prompt and thorough treatment for Little Bird. If nothing else in her diet or routine has changed then it would seem the wood is the number one suspect.

My Lilly had a case of the vomits a few weeks ago and my heart sank like a stone too! She is thankfully much recovered after a visit to her doctor and has not had any recurrence (fingers toes and eyes crossed!)

I hope you’re able to pin down the cause of Little Bird’s distress and that she makes a full recovery :)

Thank you. No, nothing else changed that I can think of though when going through her cage cleaning it just now, I found a block from one of her toys that I bought at a local pet store has sap that she clearly bit into when chomping into the wood so that toy is getting chucked too. Not sure if sap could hurt her? I removed all the other toys and scrubbed everything down and nothing else looks suspicious.
I'm so glad Lilly is ok. It sure does make the heart sink when they are sick.

Oh Lilly is just fine, the little toad! We are 99% sure it was just because she was being a little glutton at breakfast time and trying to gulp down too much dry nectar powder all at once! Plus she just enjoys driving me crazy

Is Little Bird home from hospital yet? Certainly the sap in her toy sounds like a definite worry! It's a fine day indeed when you feel like you can't trust parrot toys from the pet shop - I am SO paranoid about everything I buy for my three. I hope your girlie is safely returned to you soon :)

Lol, too funny! She sounds like a trip, that's awesome she is okay.
Yes, we are finally home and settled, thank you. Her blood work was normal. They gave her fluids and want me to give her nystatin twice a day for 14 days and reglan twice a day for five days. Giving the medicine tonight was horrible! She fought so hard and I was terrified of aspirating her because she was gasping so much. I've never had to force medicine before. I'm going to experiment with putting it in food.

Yay that's great she's home! I have to medicate my cockatiel Fang with Pimobendan for his heart every day and fortunately for us he is quite good about taking it from the syringe. Certainly you might think about mixing it with Little Bird's food though, I know some people who add meds to bread or oatmeal, something birdie really likes to make sure they gobble it all up. Anything to make medicating easier and less traumatic for all involved, right??

I’m so glad you were able to get her to the vet so quickly and that you knew you needed to!

Bumble has had meds once and I put the medicine onto a tiny crust of bread. She gobbled it right down. Bread is a special treat to her, and one of the few things she doesn’t fling everywhere, so there’s a better chance of it all getting in.

Success!!! I mashed the meds into some warm scrambled eggs (Little Birds favorite meal) and she ate them all! That worked soooooo much better, lol.

This technique works on husbands too, I'm always hiding extra vegies and stuff he doesn't like but that are good for him in his food. Blend it up finely enough and he never knows, he just wolfs it all right down :)

Birds, husbands, kids, sometimes the buggers just don't know what's good for 'em!

She is doing fabulous! She gained 7 grams of weight since Monday. She is eating very well and playing a lot. I am wondering if this was brewing from the time we adopted her because I had such trouble with getting her to eat and weight fluctuations. She is approximately 30 grams heavier than her lowest weight right now. Reglan stops tonight and nystatin goes for a total of two weeks so fingers crossed she keeps feeling better.

There's a whole line of cookbooks specializing in this very concept lol! Not drugging people with food (although I'm sure that's out there somewhere too LOL) but getting people to eat vegetables without knowing it ha!

There are others too- never tried any of them, but if you click that one, the suggested products list should point you in the right direction ;)

Great to hear Little Bird is doing well, hopefully she stays on track once the meds are finished!

So Reglan is stopped and Little Bird is still doing great. She's eating so much! She's maintaining her weight around 260 which I'm thrilled about. I'm a little nervous about feeding her scrambled eggs twice a day, every day, for two weeks, but she really hates the nystatin and it's the only way I've found so far get her to eat it.

Little Bird has been so spoiled. Once the daily serving of scrambled eggs stops she might complain to management that the standard of catering has slipped!

Good to know she’s been doing well :)
