I started out very slowly to train Rosie to allow me to file her nail tips. I use a metal file and do only one nail each evening. Now all the sharpness is undercontrol and she will allow me to file but not real happy with it. She stopped biting me when filing. I know your bird is larger but perhaps you could try something like this.

The you may need to take to vet to be dremeled. Do you go to Fallston? I was there on time when Dr. Zantop was doing this procedure on a B&G Macaw. He did give the large bird a little sedation (very little) to calm the bird instead of just restraining in a towel. The owner said the doc did a very good job and it just took a short while for the bird to recover.

Yes I first took Rosie to Dr V and he told me some things that were not true. You cannot go wrong with any of the docs at Fallston. I use Dr. Ho but they are all very good. Dr. Zantop has his own very large M. Too right there in the office all set up. He is a very old bird named Chuck. I think he is in his 70's I heard.

Also DR V is not avain certified.

They dont cut or file the nails at our vets any more, they burn it (dont know if that is what you call it). It scared me the first time thou but I will never go back to cutting. It takes up to 6-7 months before the nails are long again.

Dont they do the same in your country?

It is such a minefield!!!! My AV filed Cal because he said actual clipping could cause curvature.

I then took advise and got a cement perch....so far they are keeping her nails in check brilliantly.

The more natural the better I would say.

The burning thing sounds really interesting Links! You'll have to see what it is called!

It is whoop whap and they are finished! Sterretjie was still thinking about complaining and it was over.:D I'll have to take a photo of her toes for you.

The one leg that was broken has a nail that curl completely around and if left it actually pierces her foot. The 'burner thing' sorts this problem out completely where clipping could not.;)

Sounds great Links! Especially for Ster and her poorly foot. :(

I know Sterretjie cannot believe that landing in your garden that day gave her such wonderful fortune.

cauterising

= toeskroei. Yes that is what they do.

It almost looks like a soldering iron and you have the smell of burned nails afterwards.

I will mention that the next vet visit I have. Cauterizing is done a great deal in surgery on people to stop bleeding.
