Re: sick Jenday need help

Nothing changed in my house either. Now all my birds are sick. But I caught the others early at first sign of weight loss.

Sometimes we just don't know. Was it bacteria in tap water. Bacteria on veggies, we just don't know. I still recommend treating all birds.

Chlamydia is a possibility

Re: sick Jenday need help

so you are treating all with the Azithromyacin? The one that was really sick, how is he/she now? I hope they make a full recovery soon! you and your flock are in my thoughts as well...amazing how such little creatures take such a big part of our hearts

Re: sick Jenday need help

Yes all are getting azithromyacin. Quakers, gcc, and 3 budgies
My critical quaker has turned the corner, and won't jinx , but should fully recover.
The others never as sick ( only weight loss and one with green urine in poop) are bouncing back after second dose. Given every other day.

Re: sick Jenday need help

Also birds hide being sick, so some of this is him hiding it. Sick birds can fake eat. Feed a sick bird what it will eat, warm foods csn be tempting, eggs, oatmeal , quinoa cooked, fresh cooked rice ( don't store and re serve)
Get a kitchen gram scale weigh all birds in the home daily while this is going on. Check all poop daily. Be prepared to offer bird formula by syringe if need , I found 1 ml syringe sbd going slow worked best for us.

Re: sick Jenday need help

Ok..great timing for my computer to just **** the bed...so im using my phone. What do u use for bird formula? I will make sure i have it close by. I called several veta, the one they saw last monday os supposed to call me back, i mentiomed the azythromicine so hopefully she will just call it in. If not there is a 24 hr hospital 45 min away but they dont have an avian specialist on today with a 4 hr wait righr now so i think that is kind of pointless. Im going to keep searching i got a few new numbers. I thibk my scale is jacked up because now it says 99 and im panicking more so im thinking bird formula might be good too. Im going to call tufts university as a last result and see if they have someone. Being that they were already seen by the one thats going to call me back i would think they would call something else in or tell me to bring him in. Im so heartbroken

Re: sick Jenday need help

I'm using exact baby's store formula from pet store. Our birds are the same size. So start out slow, 1-3 ml the first time. A little watery at first incase hadn't been drinking. You don't want food to stop up inside them if they are dry. But not so watery they choke. Repeat in 2 or so hours . By the end of the day might take 3-5 ml. And can thicken. Watch poops, make sure is poop and crop is emptying. I weigh before abd after food, her average is a 5 gram weight increase from food, and by next feeding she will drop all ir part if that. By the end if the day she would start having higher start weight, but would always drop at least 2 grams to 4 grams before next feed.

Each morning first wright will be your birds true weight. Should only go up 0-2 grams each day. A big change could mean nit processing the food.

I make fresh each time as directed on container. You may use pediolyte( bsby electrolytes water fir human babies ),as yiur water to mix, first day only!!!

Re: sick Jenday need help

if tgey are open i might just show up with bird and beg and plead and have them see you...its covid times so don't know their rules.. or yiu can call back and say you are frantic and worried. They may want to give injectable antibiotics, you can't force them to choose azithromyacin....and I don't know all the good meds available. ... but ask for it to cover chlamydia too, as with multiple burds ut possible one started shedding this, rgey can be chronic shedders...also nit tge only thing it can be....im just trying to help. But I'm nit there and I'm not a vet.
