Exclamation sick Jenday need help

Ill start from the beginning, I woke up the 31st and noticed dried puke on both of my Jendays...I thought maybe they were regurgitating for each other (We have only had birds for a year and a half so Im fairly new) I washed them off, and a few hours later I witnessed Toto throw up and started looking lethargic. Not many avian vets or any for that matter were open due to holiday so I got him in to one that night that doesnt specialize in birds. He administered amoxycilin and advised a heat lamp. I brought them both as they are caged together. I also had schedualed an appointment beforehand for the following monday in case I couldnt get him seen so I kept that appointment. Pheonix is not sick but Toto was still not himself with dropped wings, bobbing his head, not pooping as much.
Monday 1/4- consulted another non avian specialist vet- she checked their crop, both were empty and seamed normal. she did find a small amount of yeast in Totos so she administed .3 Ml of Nystantin, advised giving apple cider viniger water mixture and a probiotic which we started and said not to bother with amoxycilin. He seemed to make some progress, where he would have spurts of energy and then go back to resting under his heatlamp.
Wednesday 1/13- we were able to see the avian specialist- she looked under the scope at his poop and only saw like 3 yeast, so said the anti fungal may be helping but usually is secondary to another problem like a bacterial infection so she started him back on .5 Ml of amoxycilin. Once again it seemed he was making some progress but still not himself. she was already schedualed to come to our home this week the 14th for flock check/ sexing so she said she will follow up with his illness than..
Today- Im at a loss and want my baby boy back. Hes still not right and I would have expected him to make a turn around by now. sometimes he seems better other times he seems worse. Does any one have any suggestions or experience with this??? Im a new member so I dont know if I can post a video but his wings are drooped and hes just making wierd sounds floofing up and bobbing his head like a baby bird would. like i said the specialist is coming thursday, im just really starting to lose hope and my heart is breaking I dont know what to do

Re: sick Jenday need help

Oh no
Your burd is about to die drive to avain vet now. Yiu can give 1 ml half sugar mixes in half water, just a few tiny drops. Wrap in towel heated in microwave ir dryer. Fill a water bitter with hit water to wrap with him go to vet niw
Ok thought was laying on ground. But still advice to go to vet now

Re: sick Jenday need help

this is from my thread were I almost lost my bird. Azithromyacin was used , it works quick, as vet if will work fir yiu , its broad spectrum, given every other day

made the mistake, or fell into the trap, " but she was fine yesterday "
Birds hide being sick!!!
When she showed the most extreme sick bird signs I've ever seen, full stand out feather fluff, not eating, nit moving,, only sleeping, turning her head from my food offerings of her FAVORITES ! She was at deaths door !! We have all counsel other if this when they explain their birds simular symptoms. This is an emergency, if you find your bird like this it is an emergency !!! You call your vet and insist to be seen as an emergency! Do NOT wait till the next day! If they can't see you insist they refer you to another vet, even if its an hour away. Usually they will relent and work you in.
I fell into the same trap, the wait and see. I waited to call my vet till afternoon, abd didn't reach her till evening. She wanted me to go get the meds that night. But because she knows me, and my birds, abd I said I thought she perked up a little by evening, we waited. She insisted and waited fir my call at 730 tge next morning to update her.

When she was so sick the next morning, I called, she called the pharmacy a quarter to 9 when they open at 9, the pharmacy called me at 3 min after 9, I picked up meds at 930, abd git them in her by 10. When I picked her up to give the medicine she was ice cold. She was dieing, her system was shutting down. If any of you have taken care of creatures that are in the process of death, or in shock , you know what I mean. Their extremities are cold, their body temperature drops. Mind you its 80 degrees here, and I had a powerful radiant heat panel on her thst she was snugged upto. She was cold not from temperature, she was cold because she was near death. This is also confirmed by my vet.

I foolishly thought I knew best, I put heat on her on the 3oth , ( when this stsrted), heat is critical for sick birds, I started her on antibiotics not prescribed for her, ( yes safe sn appropriate dose,) and I fooled around trying to get her to eat, and to figure out what was going on.

What I should have done is realize I'm looking at a bird that is critical, and call my vet that first morning. I know , many of you know, when yiu see a bird at full fluff, not eating, they can be about to die! They coukd die on the way to the vet, or at the vets, or before tge treatment can take effect. That you must treat this as sn emergency. We have had many people come here seeking advice, we advise must go to vet ASAP, they reply tgey have an appointment fir the morning, only to come back and say the bird died before the next morning appointment!!! And I said to myself, the something many others say, but tgey were fine yesterday. Birds hide being sick!!! Some hide it till you find them dead! Maybe she was sick before, or maybe it was something that multiplying rapidly, whatever, by the time you see these signs they are extremely sick.

I had a lizard get in the house, I put it outside, shortly after thst Penny sat in the same spot. Lizards carry salmonella, maybe that was what made her sick. My dogs go out into my yard, that has armadillo, opossum, rats, other creatures, that pee and poop. Maybe the dogs brought in something. I'll never know.

I feel extremely lucky, that she is alive. Extremely. My vet feels she has enough improvement to feel these are the right antibiotics. But she us still a very sick bird. And I'm in close contact to see if we need to add ir change medicine.

I'm sharing this for all our guests and members. So you do not fall into the trap of waiting. So you act like this is an emergency, and see your vet the same day!!+

Re: sick Jenday need help

i read dont panic..i panic... i called the avian specialist going to give her a few to call me back. This has been going on since the 31st...He is still eating and drinking and will preen himself and his cage mate. His breathing is good but its clear he is not well. Both birds have been seen since this is going on, and pheonix is not on meds and doing fine her normal self. Laurasea, thank you so much for your quick response and I will ask if the avain vet will call the Azithromyacin in to the pharmacy for him. Sorry about the pic, he hasnt laid down or anything but i know its still an emergency. Im in such a panic and have to go back and re read your post. Im glad your baby is making progress, the feeling of it all is heartbreaking

Re: sick Jenday need help

I dont know if you are waiting for others to chime in?
Many people don't have experience with sick birds. So are hesitant to offer advice.

I hope you will heed me. And keep us updated. We want your bird to make it.

Re: sick Jenday need help

i cant think of anything that has changed. they have their own room in the living room with us, i havent used any cleaners, the other birds (1 sun conure, the other Jenday, and 2 budgies) are all normal. They eat zupreem veggie and fruit pellets and get fresh chop every day. Ive been using apple cider vinegar water mixture for them. Hes a maniac to try to get seeds right now but all he wants is sunflowers which im limiting . right now hes climbing around the cage wanting to come out looking normal and playing but then he will go back to looking floofy head bobbing and chirping. almost like hes having seizures, or maybe had a stroke...i dont know... i do have dogs but they arent allowed in the room with them..i cant think of anythign that changed or what could cause this..im at a loss. I dont care what it costs I just want him back. Im going to call around again to the other specialists and see if I can get him in incase the one taht is coming thursday doesnt get back to me

Ok thank goodness. Despite how things have been going, and because this gas been going on so long. Your bird is critical at this point. Once you have wing drop and fluffed, your bird is so weak it can't keep wings in place. This only happens at extreme life threatening point. Very well may nit be eating enough. I waited to supplement food and I shouldn't have.
