Help! Stepped on my little one!

Please help! I am waiting for the vet to open right now. I am fearing the worse right now after accidentally stepping on my cinammon who was under a blanket with the pineapple... I've done a check on her and one of her wing feels off, and I'm worried the bones might be broken. And even though it's eating, drinking and walking around the cage, when it tries to fly it just plumpets onto the ground. I have clipped the wing the same as my pineapple and he is able to fly a very short distance still. But the poop too, I'm not sure if it's because of the colored pellets, the poop and urate is fine but the urine is slightly green slightly orangey red. I don't know what to do. Can I ask for some stories on your parrot with broken wings? I'm so scared right now!

I'd get her in as soon as you possibly can. Try to keep her warm and calm-- consider a dark space with a towel on the bottom etc--- warmth is also super important for birds in shock, but you have to be cautious about space heaters etc as they can contain deadly teflon/ptfe/pfoa/pfcs.

If you can turn the temp up in the house significantly, that is probably best.

Do not do anything that may add stress (other than the trip to the vet) if possible.

If appetite is an issue, you can try smashed fruit baby food (non fortified), plain oatmeal, plain potatoes, plain quinoa, along with other favorites (as long as they are healthy, within reason).

If climbing etc is causing pain for your bird (which he/she WILL hide) consider moving food/water bowls to a more accessible point. At the same time, a bird in pain will feel more vulnerable near the ground, so don't move things unless you have an idea of where your bird will gravitate overnight.

Welcome to the Forums, EveningLight, though I am very sorry it is under such worrying circumstances!

I have no particular experience or advice to offer you, having not been in a similar situation myself, but in general it is best to keep your little one calm, warm and caged and perhaps pop a towel in the bottom of the cage so she has something soft to land on, until you can get her seen to by a vet. If the wing is not broken it may still have some tissue damage and be painful, so the vet may prescribe pain meds or anti-inflammatories to help manage this during recovery.

Not sure where you are located or whether you already know of a Certified Avian Vet, but the following link may help you to find one if you don't already know of one....

I wish you and your little one all the very best!

An avian certified vet is very important (if at all possible-- as stated above).
Make sure you are 500% clear about what you want for your bird if he/she cannot fly again-- I know that nature sanctuaries will often euthanize for broken wings because wild birds are not legal in most homes and a wild bird with a broken wing cannot survive in the wild....
That is why you need to make it clear in terms of your intentions--- can you provide care for a bird who is limited by physical issues (such as a broken wing) etc etc. They may be inclined to sway you in a certain direction, so you need to know where you stand right now. A bird with a broken wing CAN survive in captivity, in many cases.
My adult bird CHOOSES not to fly, but her wings are intact-- she very rarely flies and I wish she did so more often, but it just depends on the bird and the injury etc.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and your dear conure, hope you find a skilled vet and receive promising diagnosis. So much good advice above, and yes, be very clear your intentions when dealing with sanctuaries/wildlife agencies. Parrots can live long and happy lives with a single wing under the right circumstances.

Poor baby!! Aw. These things happen.

I would continue to monitor to see how your bird does, and I would set up an appointment with your regular bird vet you go to, they can give a proper and gentle physical exam, and depending on how the bird reacts to angles of movement in its wing, ie. pain with the broken area, could also be fractured, or not injured at all, you just don't know until you get them to some professional medical help.

They may want to do an x ray to make sure nothing is broken, but its up to you if you want to take your bird to the vet for this or not. And it depends on if it continues to keep dropping down when it tries to fly or eventually can recover.
