Hey Guys I was just wondering about how mist people stand on the issue of leg bands. Who is or isnt for them?

My sun conure Linius has one (I didnt put it in) from the breeder I bought him from. Its a great way to identify him, but I worry it might irritate his leg sometimes. Could you imagine having a ring on your leg that was loose but not enough to take off?

I was considering getting it removed, but im not sure how safe is that? It seems a bird can easily get a broken leg if you try to clip the band.

I was also considering getting Linius a chip for identification purposes. However that seems a little useless because if he got out most people wouldnt know to check to see if he has a chip. (I believe chips are more common for dogs and cats?)

So let me know what you guys think!

if the band is not bothering him, i'd say leave it on, chipping is good incase he got out and you can claim his your bird

i'd put a leg band on nut as its more visable then a chip but she's never had one and i know she'll not like it

My parrotlet hated hers and spend several years chewing it off until she finally succeeded! My conure doesn't love it but he doesn't seem to bite at it or anything. I think he just accepts it. I would say that if they have a band and it doesn't seem to be bothering them, leave it alone. If they don't have a band, don't bother putting one on. I know breeders are divided about them and some use them and others are against them.

our macaw fred has had his leg band on now for almost 9 yrs he sometimes nibbles on it but very rarely , and as for him being chipped we have had a chip put in him as you never know when he could get loose so its always better to be safe than sorry, hope this helps

Didn't you read in the other post on how the inject chip in parrots?

Im highly against leg bands. I need to ask my vet to remove them one of these days. A bird of mine in the past lost her leg because of leg band....

My bird Rosie had her band removed by my vet. My avain vet said they had much trouble with them. Sometimes they caused lameness in a bird from irritation. Her leg band was not the kind that was a ring it was open and then put on. It had become part way open again and that was the problem and the reason for removal.

I actually read that post after I made this one. Its sounds horrible! but arent there some that are micro sized? Our dog has one that was injected with a needle.

Well since sun conures are larger, I guess you wouldn't really have to worry about small twigs and branches getting stuck in them (like with budgies and parrotlets) because birds can break their legs that way. But I think it's still safest to get it cut off.
