Injured Parakeet

I work at an animal shelter and today this..... person.... lets leave it at that.... comes in with a cage all wrapped up in blankets saying she has a parakeet she wants to get rid off. Apparently they shut its head in its cage door, so now they don't want it because its injured. The cage they had it in was filthy, with at least a months worth of poop at the bottom, a bowl of empty seed shells, dirty broken perches, and no water. They kept the blanket on the cage all the time because the cage was missing the top and the bird would get out. This poor little bird was severely neglected. The second I went in the cage it walked up to my hand and jumped right up. Its the sweetest little bird I've ever met in my life and didn't deserve such horrible treatment. Unfortunaly I know a lot about big birds, but nothing about a bird as little as this. Any advice on how to care for it, treat its injury, anything? Taking it to the vet isn't an option simply because my work won't pay for it, and I don't have the money. I set it up in a new cage and its eating and drinking good, and we are putting antibiotic ointment on its wounds around its neck.

By keeping the wound clean and making sure he's not picking at it. Plus cleaner environment, clean water and food. He will heal soon!

Update!!!

Bitty, as I named him lol (I call him my Little Bitty Bird) is doing great! And as you might have noticed, I've decided to keep him. All the bruising around his head has gone away and his feathers are growing back in where the wounds were. I actually think he's a she, but I'm not possitive. I found out after he was startle from my shoulder that he can fly very well and have moved him into a large flight cage. I'm thinking about adopting a couple friends for him from another shelter thats associated with mine. I work a lot and my other fosters take a lot of my time so I think he would be happier not being alone. They have all sorts of little birds, does anyone know what kinds of birds would get along with him best or is this a bad idea? He's always trying to fly into my Amazons room to say hi, which is not a good thing since she tries to eat him!

That's great!!! That boy is lucky to have you. Some people are really douches.

If you buy him a friend, don't forget to quarantine. I think you forgot to do it here since it managed to go see the other bird. The budgie could've had illnesses that would've spread to your amazon. Especially considering the awful sanitary conditions it was in....

Oh and budgies are very social thingies. If your buy him a companion (go for a male unless you want eggs...), try to be sure your bitty is used very well to you and is perfectly tame first. Or you might lose his attention.

Can you post pictures? We can help on the he/she thing. :D

I have him quarantined in another room (my bedroom), well away from my Amazon, but twice now he's managed to fly into the living room before I could stop him. My house is all open with no doors lol, so this is as quarantined as he could get.

As soon as I find my camera I will post pics!

i cant wait, he sounds like an adorable little guy!

its amazing of you to have taken him in. budgies are one of the worst neglected parrots out there. why? because theyre small, cheap, and a lot look alike to most people. so theyre disposable and replaceable. glad you took him in. no creature should be treated like that :(

Maybe you should clip the budgie's wings?? You know, since your house is so open that would help quarantine!

He acted like he couldn't fly when I first got him so I didn't bother clipping his wings. I think he was too weak from hunger and just too banged up. It was about 5 days before he could fly again. I haven't clipped his wings yet just because if I set him up in a big aviary with a few other keets I want him to be able to fly. I think I will clip them for now and let them grow back in later.

As soon as his wings are clipped we're thinking about using him as a PR bird when we goes to schools and such. He loves to ride around on peoples shoulders and isn't afraid of anything. Kids would absolutely love him :)
