It's the first warm day and I just realized that down feathers are hot

Today was the first really warm day that we have had here, and we all loved every minute of it, except for Hamlet. I think he's just realizing how warm his down feathers are.

I noticed today that during the course of normal preening Ham lost MANY more feathers than normal today. I have 6 feathers on the floor next to me and that is just within the last hour ... I know he preened out about 6 or so more this morning.

Being this is our first bout with the warm weather I don't know about this, do feathers (down feathers in particularly) start to moult out as soon as it gets really warm? I mean, there are two other reasons that I can think of for this to be happening, it's just time for a natural moult, or Ham is starting to pluck (which isn't the case).

I have also noticed that he has 1 flight feather that has grown back in ... just one ... it's really funny to see ... maybe I can get a pic and get it posted.

Hmmm I'm interested to see what evryone has to say Sidney has been moulting alot lately but the small fluffy ones not his colored ones. almost all his pin feathers are doing much better and you can actually see the outline where the orange will be on his head. I was wondering how long it will take for his whole head to turn orange?

Bucc had a small molt when he was about 7 months old, the weather had started to get really warm by then also,

I think if Ham was starting to pluck, you'd have more than just the odd few feathers laying around, My tiel is a plucker, and only started doing this last year but one day he was fully feathered and in a few mins he had taken every feather out of his chest legs and under his wings.

I think with Ham you'll find its just a natural molt, even if its gonna be a small one. Everyone told me that Bucc couldn't possibly be going through a molt, as he wasn't even a year old, took him to the vet (for another reason) and asked him, It was a molt, Does he still like his baths, or misting, would be a good idea to give him a lot of them to stop him feeling uncomfortable.

I am collecting all my down fethers and going to stuff my own pillow :07:

Yeah I think it's a molt. Like you said, I definitely don't think it would be plucking. Sisqo is always losing a few down feathers here and there

The funny thing is is that it wasn't just a "few" yesterday ... I could have stuffed two pillow last night ... I seriously think Ham lost like 25 g because of all the feathers that came off ... he's already lost 2 or 3 this morning and he's only been up like an hour or so!

I love it when they get stuck to to the top of thier heads... look like little trolls or something

Buccs cage looked like it was made of feathers when he started, have you seen him pulling feathers? if he was plucking you would know believe me, I stand guard over Gemini's cage and give him a good misting when he starts to pluck. Its heartbreaking to see him pulling at his feathers. Its heartbreaking to see your baby going through a molt also, it means they are growing up
